Hey all,

Been looking at some combos for my first fly fishing rig. I found this one on the BassPro site and it looks pretty good. The combo sells for $135, which is a bit more than I want to spend.

This rod is an 8 weight and in 4 pieces. The thing is that every other 8 weight rod I have looked at is 9 feet long and this one is 7'10" long. There is a video on the page for this rod that talks about how the shorter length allows you to fight the bigger fish more effectively and so forth. Stuff that really doesn't pertain to me right now.

I am just curious if anyone here has any experience with this rod. If you do, I'd really like to know what you think of it.

If you have never used it, you still can help me. Do you think the shorter length this one has compared to all the other 8 weight rods at 9 feet long will pose a problem for a brand new fly fisherman like me? Or, do you think it won't make much of a difference at all since I am not going to be shooting casts out to 30 yards to catch carp?

BassPro HEAT Fly Rod

Thanks all.

I have had one in the past. It's a good Rod for fighting big fish like bass pro tells you. However with the size of the heavy flies that I was using it was a lot of chunking and ducking. I can't tell you how many times I hit myself in the back, back of the head etc... I have since switched to a 9' Rod for my heavy large flies. But still 95% of my fishing it with ultra light 3wt and below.

I have one and use it pretty frequently. It is a good combo for the price and a good starter rod.

If you're buying your first fly fishing rig I certainly wouldn't recommend an 8 weight. I would get something that would be a more all around rig; for bass, brim, white bass, crappie, etc. I would recommend a 9 foot or and 8.5 foot 5 or 6 weight, unless you are going to do a lot of fishing in the salt. A cheap combo starting out is the Cabela's three forks combo for around $60 bucks on sale.. I'm like Barker, I use my 3 and 4 weights more now than any of my other rods. My 8 weights stay in the closet unless I'm going to the coast or as someone said earlier, if I want to cast big deer hair bass flies into heavy cover. Hope this helps. I've got plenty of rods I would sell in about every weight; fiberglass, bamboo, and graphite-p-

Not for your first rig. It's a little different fishing a heavy rig. Start with a four or five weight. That'll be your goto for anyway and easier to learn with.

From your earlier post: "I emailed a fly fishing guide that works here in the Houston area for carp and bass and he suggested an 8 weight would be best for me."

The guide you emailed gave you excellent advise!!!!!!!!

Sorry have no experience with the rod in question.
