I have returned and I wish I could say that we slayed them but the fact is that it was a grind. No fault of our fly guide, Tyler Hill, as he worked very hard for us putting me in some good water but the reds were just being elusive. The weather was a factor in that there was little wind and a lot of cloud cover making it hard to spot any fish until we were right on top of them and what few we saw were running before I could get a shot at them. My lack of experience with the saltwater cast didn't make his job any easier but he was patient and coached me quite well improving my timing and mechanics. Tyler is an enthusiastic young man and we got along with him very well and after a ten plus hour day on the water he offered to take us out the next day with no charge. Of course we took him up on that but it was to be another tough day so after a few hours of poling he took us out to big water where we saw Jacks working the surface but they too were just as elusive as the reds and much faster. We threw large rattle traps at them with no hookups so we moved to the opening of Pass Cavallo and drift fished the fast current running down a beachhead with deep water for two hundred yards ending into a reef point that a lot of top action was happening so I got the 8wt back out and after a few casts hooked up with a beautiful Trout my first saltwater fish on the fly and I was happy. I am looking forward to returning this summer as Tyler showed me many spots that I could walk into to wade fish so ending this with a shout out to a fun, energetic guide that loves to fish, Tyler Hill of Matagorda Angler.

Great fish bud sorry the weather sucked. Still an amazing fish on a hard trip is nice. Also sounds like your guide worked hard for y'all. I haven't hit salt in almost 30 years and you got a bucket list fish for me.

It's tough having to grind them out but you can feel really good about that fish. Hopefully next time they treat you a little better!
