Were any of these kayaker wear their life jacket ???. wondered how they drown.
I have used kayak several times and thought about getting one but with all these report from the news. I have put off getting one until later.
What are y'all thought on this ???.

Should not put a kayak in any where close to a spillway. Not only will the undertow keep you down pfd or not in most cases. But once you get in the right spot it will suck you into it. On most rivers if you're an adequate swimmer in Texas you should not have any problems. If you are going down anything with rapids it would be best to wear one.

Always wear a PFD, always.
None of us are bullet proof, circumstances happen and if it catches you unawares at least have your PFd on.

+1 on the PFD.
Just know your limitations. If you aren't accustomed to fast water, stay out of it. Work your way up to it.
I'm a flat water kayaker. I'm too old and slow to play in white water.
There were 2 young ladies on a lake in a kayak when a storm came up. One fell out of her kayak.

"Staying Afloat

Two girls learned the importance of life jackets at Falcon State Park. A Starr County game warden got a call from a woman who said her daughter and a friend had drifted out from shore on Falcon Lake in kayaks. She said the wind was blowing them toward the middle of the lake and the girls couldn�t paddle against the wind and waves. Almost immediately after hanging up, the mother called back and said one of the girls had flipped out of the kayak and could barely be seen. The warden asked a state park officer to assist in a rescue and as they launched their boat, the wind was blowing hard and the waves were white capping on the lake. A red life jacket was floating between the waves. As they reached the floating girl, she could barely speak from exhaustion. After helping her into the boat, she said she almost gave up hope of being rescued. The officers then went to the other girl who was still in her kayak and got her safely in the boat as well."

Had it not been for my PFD in August of 2013, I would have drown on a kayaking trip down the White River, and I am an accomplished kayaker, especially when I was much younger. The PFD kept my head buoyant enough where I could keep my mouth and nose above the swift water as the flipped Wilderness Systems Tarpon 135's seat well served as an air pocket. I was anchored, fishing a fast drift, and a White River motorboat who had not seen me and was upstream of me gunned his engine to run through a drift again, and his wake sloushed over my portside; combining that with the swift water, the kayak flipped. My left foot got caught in a submerged tree branch, and at 5'2", I do not have much height to stretch. Without my PFD, I would have never had the strength in the current or air in my lungs to extricate myself from the tree. The extra security of the PFD also kept me from panicking. As far as image, it's much cooler to wear one and tell your friends your story than it is having your friends visiting your coffin and guessing your story.
