Tour of Texas; Guadalupe River Trout

As the southern most trout fishery in the United States the Guadalupe River below Canyon Dam gives Texas anglers an opportunity to catch rainbow trout year round in the Lone Star State. In 1964 the Army Corps of Engineers impounded Canyon Lake. The cold water being released from the bottom of the dam would displace the native warm water species that occupied the Guadalupe. With optimal flows the water is cold enough to support trout for the first 10 miles below Canyon Dam. Lone Star Brewery started stocking the river with rainbow trout first. TPWD followed and began experimenting with different species of trout to determine which would be the most suitable trout for the Guadalupe; in the end it was the rainbow trout that did best in the Guadalupe. About the same time, a small group of Texans, who enjoyed trout fishing, came together; Bill Parvin, Dick Finta, James Keeton, Bob Newman, Chad Oliver, Bill Pabst, Glenn Richardson, Lt. Col Paul and Hazel Schubauer, Jim Vynalek, and Bill West, who later founded the Guadalupe Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Currently GRTU is the largest local Trout Unlimited Chapter.

I'll be there, too, Friday eve thru Sunday noon, and will be tying on Sunday AM. My flies can't hold a candle to Chefmike's, but I enjoy tying them and talking with people about trout, the Guadalupe and Trout Unlimited. Remember that the classes and expositions are all free -- no admission charged. The only charge during Troutfest is for the Friday night banquet BBQ.

If you go to Chefmike's table first, you'll see what flies look like before they hit the windshield. If you then come to my table, you'll see what the flies look like after their collisions with windshields.

Trout there love an attractor pattern don't hit it much but takes go way up with it. San Juan above a bead head prince phesant tail or hares ear. Do not forget to fish for smallmouth and guads for that matter. I think if tpwd didn't think the trout were going to take to the river and put that money into smallmouth it would be world class water for them. Cool water and it is loaded with crawdads. See middle pic in sig line that one was at rio raft. Should be a great time to be there. Hope it's not spring break break for some or hope it's to cold to float the river. The rubber hatch(toobs) is prolific starting soon. That hatch often starts after hang over breakfast time and ends at happy hour. Only good think sometimes it's the prettiest hatch on any river in the us others the ugly bugs are out lol. Good luck look forward to a report.

The latex hatch can be quite pretty on the horseshoe

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Had fun fishing the Guadalupe River today. Although only one Rainbow Trout was caught and released, still had fun! Today's Video.
