I am going to Concan in July, and am considering taking up flyfishing so i can enjoy that there. Any advise for a new flyfisherman going to the frio?

If you haven't fly fished before, the same advice will apply no matter where you plan to go - connect up with a Certified Casting Instructor and get a lesson or two. There's no great mystery or extraordinary difficulty in fly casting but you will have a MUCH better time if you learn to cast before you're out there on the water.

Have fun... soon you will be hooked.

welcome aboard coastal

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

I would recommend being prepared for gin clear water, the occasional tree limb or stump snag, and rocks. The cold Frio will feel good in July. Well tied flys and long light leaders will probably be helpful. Crayfish and small minnow immitations and wholly buggers should be good, along with the regular topwater bugs and poppers for early and late.

During the day, i.e. between 11 am and 5pm, watch out for people, particularly tubers. However, a 185 lb. attorneyfish or cpafish fights pretty good and will hit just about any younghottiefly or singlemaltscotchwhiskeyfly fished on top and allowed to drift. Not edible unless cooked a really long time, but hey, there's no possession or slot limit. Also, easy to clean, what with no heart or guts to worry with. cheers

Good Luck,

Willcpafish flush

In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.
