Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Childhood friends from Virginia – Mike Deckelman, Alex Franseen, Jeff Church, Jason Herlocker and Kelsey Schmurman - chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing. The group drove 1,000 miles to come down to Fort Lauderdale and fish with the Topshotfishing team. As the anglers boarded the boat, they were greeted by the Topshotfishing team and were asked what type of fish they wanted to catch. Their response was – whatever is biting - a Sailfish would be great.

On our way out we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait in Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale. Fifteen minutes from there, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started off trolling with two #8 plainers down and four surface baits.

The anglers started celebrating their annual fishing expedition by popping their beers and toasting to good times and good luck. The leader of the gang was Jeff and throughout the fishing trip he barked out instructions to all the other anglers – while the rest of the anglers laughed – all in good fun.

For the past few days, the Kingfish action was hot and heavy. As we trolled the reefs zig-zagging from 90 ft. out to 300 ft. of water, the anglers took turns reeling in their fish. With 15 Kingfish, 4 Barracudas, 2 Mahi Mahi’s, and 2 Bonitos it was now time to do some kite fishing. We put out two kites in 145 ft. of water with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite. Our first fish was a Kingfish which skyrocketed out of the water and missed the hook. Our next fish was a Mahi Mahi that Jeff reeled in – “that’s my dinner”, he remarked. We set up again and this time it was Mike’s turn. Left long!!!! Sailfish!!! –Mike jumped into the fighting chair. As the fish headed north, a Chinese fire drill began with Dave, our mate, clearing the rest of the fishing lines. Then the Sailfish decided to make a u-turn and headed south – straight for us. Michael did a great job keeping the line taut. After a twenty-five minute battle, Dave, our mate, billed the Sailfish for picture taking and was released. Great job, Michael – you accomplished an item on your bucket list.

It was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Bar located at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock while continuing their drinking celebration. At the dock, Dave filet out their catch for the night’s dinner.
