Picudo Sportfishing Report
Oct1 to Oct 8 2016
Its been a fantastic week of fishing at the Cape! Despite strong winds early this week the conditions have been perfect! The sea temps have settled in the mid 80s, air temps hovering around 90, the bait is in thick, and boat pressure is minimal.

The Blue bite is still on with the hot area still at Poso de Cota up to Gaspareo. The bait is stacked close in and fish are being hooked within a half mile from the beach! With some Sailfish and quite a few Stripers mixed in the boys have been getting multiple billfish daily. We had great fishing onboard Picudo releasing 2 Blues and 5 Stripers in a couple of days. We had a monster come in on our short flat softhead and decimate us! All heavy gear and we still got smoked! That fat girl went nuts ripping off line, jumping like crazy, and broke our 80 lb. test mono like nothing. The last I saw was a 700+ toad jumping away from us about a half mile away! We've now dumped 2 fatties this season, makes ya wanna cry!! Oh, well, thats fishing and we'll get another shot at one! So anyway, with the early morning Dorado bite going off, it makes for a perfect day of fishing, food fish dawn patrol and catching fatties the rest of the day!!

The inshore fishing has slowed a bit compared to the last few weeks. The Dorado are still here but smaller in size, with the larger ones up to maybe 15 lbs. Everyone is picking up 2-3 per boat but they are mostly scattered blind strikes. The Skipjack are still biting and are lurking in the shallows 100 feet and less. There is a tuna bite off Grey Rock where the pangas and halfday boats are getting some football size YFTs on chunk squid.

Although the main bite is still up on the Pacific side there have been billfish, dorado, and a few wahoo brought in from the 95 fathom spot, 1000 fathom curve, and 4-6 miles straight south off the Cape Rock up to Cabo Falso. We boated a Blue yesterday 3 miles off El Molino! So the fishing is scattered around and you have a good chance in many different areas.

The offshore fishing is also good with some big tuna up to 180 lbs. being landed, most out on the San Jaime and Golden Gate Banks but also finding a porpoise school has been productive. Its still hit and miss so prepare for feast or famine. They're getting them on live bait Skipjack, lures, and those loyal kite fliers are also producing!

So we're well into our fall fishing and conditions look good thru the following week. We have a couple of tropical disturbances down below so we'll keep a close eye on those as they develop through next day or so. This is a dangerous time of year and we're not into the clear until mid Nov. Fishing has been great and this should continue. I've havent seen a Blue bite like this for a long time, so if you want a shot at one of these once in a lifetime fish, nows the time!! Come on down and bag a fatty! Saludos from Picudo!
