Spend the extra money and get a Mega 10 SI. The pixel density is greater and the images clearer. Very easy to use. You wont be sorry.

Is the 10 much better than the 9 in image quality?

Depends on if you are linking to a Minn Kota or MG trolling motor now or in the future...

There are a few differences between the Lowrance and the Humminbird. Lowrance allows use of a single freq while HB allows you to use the combined 83/200 together with a split sonar screen to better visualize the fish under you and the fish around you. HB is the only maker that uses the color bar. A vital tool for understanding the limitations and colors availabe in the soar palette. This provides key verification of softest and hardest echo returns. HB is much easier to set up and use than the Lowrance. While I teach the use of both, HB is currently the industry leader with CHIRP and MEGA on their units.

I have had Lowrance pretty much since my first boat in 1985, I am getting a new rig next March/April, I am going to take a serious look at Hummingbird, no complaints with Lowrance, I am changing brands of boat so I very well could change electronics if I like them.

I just switched to 3 Helix 12" in my Skeeter from the Lowrance, had 3 Lowrances, two at the console and one in the bow, two 12" and one 10". It is amazing the difference in clarity and being able to actually see the fish and they are extremely easy to use and set up. Dont think i will ever go back to Lowrance.

I've had and like both. But if you want to integrate with the trolling motor, you'd have to choose Lowrance for Motorguide and Humminbird for MinnKota. They should make the network standard so you can mix and match. Can you imagine if you had to buy an HP computer if you wanted to use Samsung monitors, and Dell computer if you wanted to use LG monitors??? Boat electronics mfg's have a lot to learn about standards smile
Good luck,
Tim

I have Humminbird on one of my boats, and Lowrance on the other. I prefer the Bird to the Lowrance. The Birds are easier to adjust, have better SI, and contrary to what most will say, my 2d on the Bird is just as good or not better than my Lowrance. Im about to pull the trigger on a Solix 12 to replace the Lowrance unit myself.
