Would like to try trolling for Reds at Calaveras lake so looking for pointers to get started. BTW don't have a downrigger. Looking for advice on speed and lure selection. is it even possible without a downrigger?

Haven't fished Calaveras but it was very effective on Fairfield, especially when the reds refused everything else.

The count down (CD) lures, Bombers, Mirrowlures, etc. any minnow like plug that will get down 25 to 30 ft.

Check your electronics to find their depths and troll accordingly using length of line out and speed to vary depth. The line counter reels help but aren't required.

I was catching reds in Trinity bay (3-5 fow) trolling Rapala Minnow #7. I bet it'll work in freshwater at similar depths.

I've had success way back when ( the 80's) using hell benders removing the hooks and putting a 25lb leader 3 ft off the back hook with a tony acetta gold spoon. Control the depth with speed and line you pay out. When you hit the bottom mark you line with a sharpie that will give you a good reference at that speed and then you can play with it as your depth changes. Most of the redfish I caught were in 18-25ft out in front of the wall headed towards the dam.

Call Red Alert Fishing, $250.00 for four people for four hours of fishing, can't beat that. You will learn a lot about the lake and how to pattern the reds.
