I live about 10 minutes north of downtown San Antonio. what is your favorite place to fish down here? looking for places no more than an hour away, but the closer the better obviously. I have only tried one spot in town, Millers Pond, there were a couple of people catching fish but I didn't catch anything, though I wasn't there for too long.

Have you tried calaveras or braunig lake? Both are probably 15-20 minutes from you and the red fishing is food this time of year.

I grew up in and around SA, My buddy and I grew up just following a map, exploring and finding our own places to fish. A few hot spots in Floresville, TX where the SA river flows through. Nice sized catfish in there.

Guadalupe River: Go to Google maps, locate where the remains of the Canyon Lake spillway dumped in to the Guadalupe. The location where it dumped, dredged out a deep hole. Catfish & Striper will sit in this hole. Especially in the Winter. If you go after rainbow trout are released, take a swimbait to match the release and the odds are in your favor to catch some big fish.

Braunig or Calaveras Lakes: I haven't fished these lakes in 20 years. I assume it's the same. Live bait caught with a net, wade out and try to cast in to a deep channel or deep water. I always enjoyed night fishing here.

Max Starke Dam: Marble Falls. This place exceeds your hour drive, but this place is so beautiful for hiking and fishing. Fish up by the dam when they are generating or hike down to the blue hole. Super deep water and big catfish.

Canyon Lake: Throw a net for shad and use for catfish bait. However, my best luck was going out at night with a headlamp and net. Flip over rocks in the water and catch about 20 crawfish. I would then use them for bait. Opens up the variety of fish you catch. Sometimes I would just throw my bait out less than 20 ft from the bank and cat big cats and bass!!

Hope this helps and gives you ideas on what to try.

Medina Lake. Not much bank access but if you can find some the lake is full of water and FULL of 8-10inch LMB that were stocked last year....they wont leave your bait alone. I've pulled some nice blue cats out over the summer also.

Yes, Canyon, Braunig and Calaveras. I fished out some of the last of the hybrids in Medina in the late 80's. I haven't fished it since.
