James is 100% correct on all fronts. Keep promoting SL but with a cash reward for a live release into the lake after certifying it.

I have to agree with that article 100%
I've been around since the birth of the brainstorm of stocking Florida bass and their hybrids from day one and I benefited from those stockings by catching a 10+ personal best in 1985 and most fishermen back in the day had dreams of catching a world record eventually.
The SL program was great and everyone knew it would just be a short while and the record would belong to Texas.
Well now after all these years I had wondered why are they still having the program? Seems just stocking Florida's would be better than trying to harvest the eggs from a handfull of SL's, and now it's turned into a program that has run it's course and the bottom line is "where are the record bass?"
It's all about money now, and not about producing a record fish!
If I were lucky enough to catch a SL today, I'd take pictures and turn it loose!

One thing no one takes into consideration is the amount of fishermen now compared to when the program started.Simple math more fishermen less fish. This is just my opinion.

You help make the point! The simple math is more fishermen is correct and that should mean more SL should be showing up which the article addresses.
Why aren't we seeing a boatload of 13+ pounders when the overall mentallity now days is catch and release?
Just like the artlcle says after all these years 13 pounders should be common or one would think?

All TPWD would have to do is contact all the Taxidermist statewide and ask them how many 10 12 and 13 pound plus bass they've mounted or did reproductions on in the last 3 years. That would be a survey I would find interesting.

Most of you miss the point of what TPWD is trying to do. They are taking the genetically superior fish (SALs) and trying to come up with a larger strain of black bass. They take eggs from an above average female and fertilize them with a male of known genetics and see what transpires. If you want a Clydesdale you don't start with 2 Shetland ponies do you? They are trying to do with bass what breeders did with deer and it is going to take some time. They don't have a controlled diet, supplemental additives or medical treatment that deer can be given. There test subjects are released into the wild to see what happens. I believe TPWD has done a super job in their history all things considered. If your not my age (63) or older you never fished in Texas when there was no Florida strain bass and a huge fish was 6 or 7 pounds. Look at Lake Fork right now. If it wasn't for TPWD it would just be another lake, nothing special. So if they make some mistakes along the way in their attempt to grow bigger fish for Texans then I for one will let them slide on it. And the SAL program costs taxpayers NADA.

Why should they pay a cash reward for you to release it? That doesn't do much for research and spawning.

The SAL program has been a resounding public relations success. Unfortunately nobody can point me to any scientific studies or published information showing that the program has been a biological success as well.

It is based upon a false biological premise. Sure sounds good to anybody that ever was a livestock breeder. But taking and trying to isolate and concentrate the gene pool is a step in the wrong direction, especially with respect to predatory fish species. We get the "anomaly" of a huge fish through greater, not lesser, genetic diversity. This means more fish, not less, need to be spawned, and the natural selection process allowed to work to single out the specimen that has the potential for gigantic proportions.

Problem is, the PR success is so huge, the lack of proof of biological success is constantly swept under the rug and kept from public view.

Introducing the exotic species, "Florida bass" to Texas waters has been a documented biological success. The SAL program has not.

OTOH, I find TPWD to be among the best of such state organizations, providing the citizenry of Texas with a wealth of fishing, hunting and outdoors opportunities. Our state parks are beyond awesome. Those folks, for the most part, do a tremendous job with a tiny budget.

Yep, I agree with him and have for years. It's not working in its current state.

I believe the problem is handling the fish before it is turned over to TP&W.

I'm sure a lot of those 13+ ended up in a frying pan also, but that's also a "what if" and I know personally that 10 pound bass still don't grow on trees.
You catch one over ten you've got bragging rights no matter if you report it or not, but it's still not common.
As mentioned the SL program has and still is a huge PR success, but biologically after nearly 30 years the jury is still out.
I caught a 10.13 personal best to date, on Falcon in 1985 one year before the SL program started, and that was directly due to the stocking of Florida strain bass.
No studies I'm aware of can prove one way or another whether the big fish that are caught now are due to the SL program or the continued stocking of pure strain Florida bass, but my money would be on the Florida stockings for obvious biased reasons.
When money is to be made and it's thru sponsorships and all that goes with it, it's going to be hard to say it hasn't helped and maybe even with more stockings, but to point to it alone as the main reason we have huge bass in Texas lakes now and it's the only reason, is way off the mark.

I just wonder how many times those big bass spawned in the lake before they hit that magic #13 pounds. Did their genetics become any different?

I've spent a lifetime fishing and was a member of BASS from 1983-1999 and my personal best is just over 8 pounds caught at Benbrook by Fort Worth. Funny how after all these years the slot limits, catch and release, and sharelunker program nobody's catching new record bass in Texas. Could be that nature just doesn't want it that way.
