Thinking of ram mounting an iPad on my consol for mapping using the navionics app. Anyone tried this? Looks interesting and alot cheaper than another unit.

The first thought that runs through my head is how much impact/vibration can an ipad take? (I ask because I honestly don't know).

That GPS/fishfinder is designed to take quite a bit of physical punishment from normal boat operations.

Also consider the heat. My note 8 will shut down if it gets too hot and direct sunlight will get it too hot.

I have done exactly what you are thinking of and it worked.

I had a Raymarine Dragonfly Pro that connected to the iPad through a WiFi signal and was able to create real time charts with Navionics Sonar Chart before Autochart was available from Hummingbird.

It worked well and impact/vibration was never an issue. The only issue was being able to see the screen in bright sunlight. And yes it would sometimes get too hot and shutdown.
