Please help a tired old man out. I just bought 2 Helix units for my boat, replacing a 997 which had a older Navionics chip and a Lowrance which had an older Lakemaster chip. I'm as non technical as it gets, so please be gentle with you response to the questions "what chips do I need to get for these units? Can one be updated and the other replaced? Is the update easy to do, etc?" Thanks for your help. Rr

You cannot update either one, but you can get a discount on a Navionics+ card using either one to activate a Navionics UPDATE card. Once the activation is done you end up with the Navionics+ product that has all the maps for the US and Canada and still have the use of your old card.
Current Lakemaster map cards will only work in Humminbird units. The company that owns Humminbird (Johnson Outdoors) purchased the Lakemaster map product for its exclusive use.
Bottom line is you need to purchase two new cards to have current map data. Those units will not share mapping.
