New member here hoping you guys can help with some advice. I would like to take a 6 yr old boy and his mom who have never fished on a short canoe trip on the San Gabriel somewhere near Liberty Hill tomorrow. Can anyone recommend some good put it/take out points for an easy and scenic float? Thanks guys I appreciate any help, Jim

I don't think the San Gabriel typically is big enough for a good float that far upstream unless it is flooded from rains which I would consider dangerous. You might have better luck launching at the San Gabriel park in Georgetown and floating to the low water crossing at highway 29 east of town.

I just took the trip from Georgetown to the low water crossing and did more walking than paddling. Went through a couple nice chutes though where my inexperienced friend sunk his kayak twice. Actually, it was one of my kayaks and the damage he did to the bottom was worth the laughter at his antics. At one point he ran into a tree and flipped completely upside down.

Jim, That float from San Gabriel park to the HWY29 crossing is nearly 7 miles and not something I'd take any newbe down much less a mom and her 6 year old kid .. I've done it once years ago (1990?) and it was an adventure to say the least but being 30 years old at the time and experienced made it possible. I would suggest that you do go to the park or to the low water crossing and just paddle upstream as far as you can then back to the launch site.. That will still be a big adventure for them both. You will be able to gauge their "comfort level" by doing a safe short trip first before jumping into something more demanding.. watch mom carefully and be safe..
