How rough is the water at squaw in the wind? Was thinking of trying to reserve a spot and yak it for some talapia

Kayaks are rare on Squaw Creek but a few guys do it though I have never once seen them entering, exiting or floating by while bank fishing. What I would recommend is watching windfinder.com for a relatively low wind day, then head up north into one of the coves or creeks where the tilapia bite is pretty aggressive.

You have to be careful on certain days because if the air is cold, and of course the water is always warm to hot, there can be a thick fog bank. Since it is generally a windy lake, this cloud literally blows across the water. It is really cool to see this from the bank; it would be an absolute nightmare if you found yourself out in a boat lane and heard a bass boat coming at you but couldn't see 20 feet in front of your yak . . . and the boat wouldn't see you either.

Boat traffic on Squaw, especially in the winter months, is very heavy, so stay off the main lake and work your kayak around the shorelines. Boats really ramp their speeds up out there so even the shoreline heading back to the dam would rock and roll quite a lot from big wakes.

There are cleaning stations at the boat ramp to clean your tilapia so you don't have to carry them home and make a mess.

Big tilapia out there, some in the 3 lbs. range if not bigger!
