At this time I have a foot control trolling motor. However I am not as stable on my legs as I used to be expecially when I am on the T/M with one leg. What are some of the pros and cons to hand control? I have heard they are safer, are they?

I put a recess tray in my boat and it is 200% better on my legs and body. I wished I would have done it sooner. I could not beleive the difference. I very rarely us my butt seat when fishing and only when I am fishing in high wind and I have stood on that thing for 12 horus.

The only reason that I can think of that a hand control is better than a foot control is in the wind when you are bobbing up and down. However, if you get a long enough shaft so that you do not cavitate in the wind, then the foot control is the way to go.

Just my .02 hope this helps in your decision.

Try the recessed tray. I have fished all my life with a foot control, and I can just fish better with it. I can't with a hand control.

Good question. I have used both off/on for many years and they both have their merits. I certainly can relate to the stability prob. in the wind or boat wakes. I currently have a #70 Minn Kota foot cont. I have considered getting the same motor in hand cont. just for the "2 flat feet" aspect. When a fished so many hours years ago I used a hand cont. I really hate to cut-in a hole in the deck of my boat for the control assm. but that might be a comprimise and I might like it. Maybe someone would demo both for you before you decide.

I like the foot control after years with the hand control it feels better for me than to keep takin my hand off the reel to adjust the boat. However when I had the hand control I added a momentary button to the floor of the boat so I wouldn't have to keep turning on the motor.

I used foot controlled for over 20 years. I put a hand control on my current boat and like it better. Besides the extra stability, I've found that I control it by bumping it with my knee. After a while you get where you control your direction without really thinking about it. Also, it causes less clutter on the fishing deck.

If you want to use a hand control, buy a Pro-Kon-Trol handle. It will make all the difference in the world when using a hand controlled motor.

Had a foot control previously, now have a hand control. As evv59 said, if you get a hand control make sure to get momentary foot buttons - - I've got one on both sides of the deck so no matter which way you're facing there is one convenient. That makes all the difference. The thing I disliked about foot control was that the pedal was always pointed forward, which was uncomfortable for me if I was trying to face sideways while fishing, as well as being bad for my balance. The thing I dislike about hand control is taking my hand off the rod to adjust the direction, even slightly - - I'll have to try the Pro-Kon-Trol handle.

One other thing people fail to mention is there are less problem`s with hand control unit`s. Not as many moving part`s.
Have 36 volt MG with 3 big foot button`s.Have had both personally like hand better.

I've used them both over 38 years of fishing and the hand control wins hands down....

I told you that I would cut the hole for the recess for you !!! I like to drill holes in boats. Call for an appointment. PS- Not responsible for sinking the boat.

If you want to fish sideways then do not screw or just unscrew the foot pedal to/from the floor of the boat. There is no rule that states you have to do this. Why do you think the cables are so long?

i like foot control, but then again I have not tried the hand control. It seems to me the hand control would just be something else to get in your way.
