Ok, background info, I've got a little seat time fishing from the kayak, mostly in much smaller waters than Lake Lewisville. I've only caught blues from the shore (1/2 mile hike to father in law's honey hole), and nothing more than 5 or 6 lbs. I know there are bigger fish out there, and they're not all on the far side of the lake, but I'm having trouble finding them. I just recently learned that automatic and fish id on are the wrong settings on the sonar, so that may be part of my problem. I would love to hire Tom to show me how to find them, but I can't fit it into the budget right now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I live in Corinth so access to the Hickory Creek branch (west of I35e bridge) is easy. I plan on being on the water Sunday morning and have an extra kayak if anyone wants to go.

240 views and no replies? Maybe I didn't ask right.
There's lots of info out there on reading sonar but only for the high end units. Can anyone help me understand my humminbird piranha max?
How do I fish skinny water? I mean do I just pick a spot and not cast as far. How do I pick the right spot? Is anyone familiar when the Hickory Creek branch that would tell me where I should start? Maybe by the bridge, or near the creek mouth, or out in the middle, or should I forget about hickory creek and find a different area of the lake?
I appreciate all the answers y'all have given to questions I didn't even have to ask, and the invitation for Sunday morning still stands, weather pending. Thanks, Josh

hey Josh, welcome to the forum. you might ask this question over in the kayak section to get some help. i'm not familiar with that lake, so i can't give much help.
hope you get out there and find the fish and get familiar with the sonar. there are lots of vids on youtube about the pirahnamax units, check some out and you might pick up a few tips. also could do a search for the manual online.
hope this helps

The shad are starting to spawn so fish shallow, near the bank in wind blown gravely points.

Your fish finder won't help you find fish in skinny water. You have to go to side scan for that. Listen to Tom he knows Lewisville. When you are paddling in that skinny water slap the water from time to time with your paddle and see if you spook any fish. If you do, might want to drop anchor.

Hey Tom you caught so many fish out of LL they started nameing points after you gravely points. Tom sorry I just had to @ general jigs I posted here instead of the kayak forum cause my ?'s are more about finding blue cats than rigging the yak. I've watched a lot of youtube videos on sonar and most of the informative ones are on the higher end units, not the cheap ones like mine @ Tom. I'm catching shad 10 feet from the bank. Should I be casting 15 feet from shore? That seems way to shallow to me, but.... well, there's a reason I'm here looking for advice. @ Shane. The kayak offer stands, but if you're over 6' let me know ahead of time. I have to remove the foot braces to fit all the way in the spare one. @ Chuck P. I wonder how kayak shy blue cats are. Carp are not. I once hit one with the yak while it was feeding on the surface!
