I would like to try some jug fishing, on a small private lake, to begin with. What is the basic setup? Rigging, baits, etc. I'm not trying for the record, just some good eating size. Thanks for any info!

I make my own with white foam and PVC, haven't jugged in a while but you can catch some nice fish with them, Catboss is right with the concept of a bottle, weight and hook. As far as bait choices you can use just about anything that you would use on rod and reel, good bait that I prefer is cut chunks of perch.

I find that PVC is way more than necessary. They look nice but not needed. Just use a 2litre bottle, especially if its a private lake.

thanks for the info. Keep the tips coming! What size hook, main line. how do you attach the hook, like a drop shot, or short leader? Thanks!

Quick rundown, get your float, like a Clorox bottle or something of that size, if you do a chemical bottle make sure to thoroughly clean it and make sure the lid is secure, attach your mainline to the bottle, if say around 50lb mono should be more than enough unless your targeting monsters then if say some heavy heavy braid or something of that nature, get a feel of how deep your going to be setting them and make your line about 3ft deeper than what you need, attach aroud 3 circle hooks starting about a foot off of the bottom then about a foot up for each of the others, then tie a brick or something like that at the very bottom to weigh it down, then bait it with shad or perch preferably, or hotdogs or whatever you have

lots of ways to do it, I have to keep it simple, I have used 3 way swivel, weight on one end, and hook other, to many lines, so no we use a line from jug to weight, then tie some loops in line and attach hook that way or friends use snap swivel to hook. i have to replace string every so often cause it will twist, so have extra string, lots of fun, the kid loves chasing down jugs!! good luck, we also use power aid bottles, paint inside with white spray paint, some times put color duck tape on outside to see it easier too. good luck, le us know what works for you

Without love of the land, conservation lacks meaning or purpose, for only in a deep and inherent feeling for the land can their be dedication in preserving it.

You can either do stationary or free floating.
We usually did stationary.
Get a piece of small rope/large twine about 5 foot longer than the water is deep, put a weight on the bottom about a pound or so and a bleach bottle on top. make some stationary loops in between with barrel swivels on them and get some staging clips from walmart or academy so you can take the hooks off.
I believe for private water you don't have to follow the regs about white jug and min of 3' between hooks and max of 5 hooks per jugline. However if it is a subdivision lake you may not be allowed to legally set juglines so check on it.
We use circle hooks and have caught fish from under legal size to over 80 lbs on it. You can get as fancy as the pic above, but there is really no point.

I pretty much built mine like this except I used an eye bolt instead of an eye screw and I stuffed a small chunk of foam down into the pipe after I got one cap glued on, then put the piece of rebar in & stuck another piece of foam just far enough in so I could glue the other end cap glued on, that way the rebar has some padding at each end & wont end up knocking the cap off over time. Also, I wrapped a piece of white duct tape around at the top to write my name & address on with a small removable piece for the date. I love running jugs.
