Finally found the foam to make my own kayak carriers! google rocks!
foamforyou.com
i got the 36x30x4.5 of micro cell foam for $45.85+$26 for shipping. thats enough foam for 21 blocks or 10.5 sets. at $25-$40 a set thats alot of savings! will make a 36x12 for each kayak. nomore worries about the hull of the kayak warping while.in transit or storage. just figured id share the info.

Im pretty sure I paid under $20 for my 2 foam blocks w/ straps and a carriying case from Academy(but if you can get 10 sets out of that then your way is obviously cheaper, but only if you need 10 sets). These are the car topping foam blocks but you could just as easily use them to store the kayak on a flat surface like a concrete floor.

Hey Bad man... I can't follow the math there. How many pieces do you get for that price? Might be interested if you have extras...

i measured the set i have that i got from cabelas and they were 12Lx4Wx4T. with 36Lx30Wx4.5T i can get 2 rows vertically which is 24W that leave 6 more inches of foam for another 3 out of the center leaving no waste and 21 total blocks. i plan on 2 15Wx36L to basically make a matress for them to sit on in the garage and in the bed of the truck. my kayak spends as much time in the truck bed as it does on the water so only having it supported by 2 blocks 4 inches wide puts alot of stress in those spots when strapped down and under pressure. id rather have it supported over a bigger area for less chance of warping and dramage. should work. will let everybody know how it turns out. and for prices i searched walmart to austin kayak and others for avg pricing then went with the cheapest advertised price. $25. if it protects the kayaks i am in.

I haven't thought about it but should I not be just sitting the yak on floor and stacking the other on top?

if you stack a kayak flat on the floor it could deform the keel and caus it to track and handle differntly. just like laying a boat flat on a flat bed trailer instead of a boat trailer. it need to be properly supported.. i am cheap so refused to pay full price for a block of foam. found the set i have in the bargain bin and habe been searching since for.the correct foam. finally found it.. now with a nice soft cradle i will have no worries of damaging the hull or warping it while sinched down in the truck.

finally got about 30 minutes to unwind and used my sawzall to cut the block down. started with the electric fillet knife which worked fine but was slow so i broke out the power tools. once i had 2 36 inch long by 12 wide blocks i set the blade on my circular saw to 50 degrees and cut a nice v in the middle for the kayak to sit in. now i have a nice 36 inch long base to support the yak while in the garage or in the truck.
pretty satisfied with the results and the price was awesome.

sawzall got a little squirely but it works great sofar. got the yak all strapped down and rady for the first ride in the truck on it. may have to slide it more tawords the back and put one of my other block up front. man i almost sound like im paranoid about the shape of the hull getting massed up.
