If you enjoy the outdoors and have young children, you may have thought about taking them fishing. Some of the hesitant dads I've visited with worry about if they will like it. They worry about not catching fish. They worry their kids will not really want to fish. The fact is, kids are just kids. They don't have the hangups and expectations you do. The outside world is a bigger playground to explore with boundless limits. If you decide to spend your time fishing on a fishing trip with kids, don't plan on fishing. Plan to spend time giving instruction and celebrating small victories. Don't be surprised when your future fisherman wants to explore and look for bugs or fossils rather than fish. Encourage it. The adventure of the trip is what will keep them wanting to come back. If you have a kayak, take your child along. Rent a small kayak for them or just go play in yours. Eventually as they get more comfortable you can incorporate fishing too. Tandem kayaks are great for these outings and are often available for rental if you don't have one. Good write up. Now I've got a question. I've done a fair amount of reading on this topic, and a lot of writers/anglers suggest that you not do the line, cork, hook, worm approach. Its boring if you're not catching. They suggest giving them something to cast and retrieve. So, at what age can you start a young one on something like that? I gotta admit that Cameron casting a real lure 4 feet from me makes me very nervous. Even worse, would be him getting a hook in him. Last time I took him out I put a large swim bait on a hook. The size made it easy to cast/retrieve, and it was relatively weedless.

i take my kids with the bobber hook idead they like it its exciting to them when it goes under. plus bluegill can be the easiest fish to locate there are everywhere, my kids are to small to cast a rod. to each his own, gotta find what the individual likes i guess.

I bought a 2 man Pelican when my son was young and stuck him up front. We always had a blast...well at least until he got too big to paddle around in the front of that yak. Got him his own and he still loves it. That thing worked great even in saltwater where we took it to the end of the North Jetty at Port A and he caught big jacks on topwaters til his arms were limp. Kids and yaks are a great combo. That all being said he has now surpassed my PBs in the yak and seldom lets me forget about it. Dang kids.

I like to use a worm rigged weedless with just a split shot if lure fishing. Hook stays out of the way for the most part. You might want to try with casting lessons on the bank before you let them toss lures in a yak.

I took him to a small lake and put just a cork on the line. He enjoyed tossing it in the water. Got pretty good at it to.

once he's got that down, might try the hook in a worm, covered up on the bobber.
