This might be a dumb question but I didn't think AJ's were in that deep of water.I thought the floaters are in 1000'+ and groupers usually are on the bottom, so you are looking at electric reel territory. Forgive my ignorance, this trip will be my first that far out.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Perdido is in nearly 8,000 FOW, next to a shelf that breaks into almost 11,000. Boomvang/Nansen is around 3200, & Hoover is 4500-ish You're not gettin to the bottom... All the fish are suspended at the bottom of the rig, about 4-500 feet down.

Found out the manager at my new career is an angler we hit it off good from the start! Take him/her some tuna to grill and maybe a jar of canned tuna and you'll prolly get the easiest cat scans. Not that I'm suggesting you suck up to them or anything ....

Packed my gear bag last night. Not that I'm chomping at the bit or anything.

Packed my gear bag last night. Not that I'm chomping at the bit or anything. LoL, you'll most likely do that about 6-7 more times before October....... It's funny. Just one dam year I'd like to NOT buy anything to get ready for a trip. Seems I spend about $400/ trip in added or replaced gear. Every year, I think " OK, I'm set for a couple seasons", & every year I get back & have to $$$ to get back to where I was! Ditkarulz- you think you're addicted now?....... now my biggest lament is that I'm FULLY invested, & don't go enough to warrant the $$ spent! I love tuna fishing!!!!

I know, I will pack and unpack a dozen times, just to feel like it will make the trip come sooner. It's either that or start looking on Tackle Direct or Charkbait for stuff I didn't know I needed until I saw it. I'm really trying to aim most of my gear for dual purpose. At least that's what I tell the wife
