In fact, I should finish it this week. All I got to do now is finish the console lid and paint the outside. Then, back to the beach where I left MY yaks

this looks great. one of these days, you gotta let me help you build one of these kayaks.
with the wife's blessing (only because i am about to build some drawers for the cabinets and repaint the kitchen), i am about to acquire me some nice wood working tools.
wonder if you can give me some advice.
about to pick up a table saw with some nice blades, 32gallon compressor, hvlp guns, router and nailers. think i am getting the dewalt dw745, but unsure because they said its not safe to use with a dado blade. maybe step up and get the one that is compatible. anyways, my question is on the router. do i really need a 3.5hp plunge router? do i need a planer? planers aren't cheap and so are the replacement blades. i notice you got a scroll saw, can a jig saw be used instead?

Looks nice, but wouldn't a true Aggie Yak have a screen door built into the bottom? just kidding......

Facebook posts asked if I should install a sign "this side up." LOL, the new owner is a diehard fan of A&M. He is the new City Manager in Balch Springs and has become a dear friend. As far as production I am really enjoying my unemployment even though I have 2 request for builds after this one.

I'll take you up on your offer after the good fishing slacks off. I'm not up to date on all wood working equipment, my table saw came from a contractor friend, it's a Delta 36-650, and it's 230 vac a real hog. If you get into strip building you have to cut several hundred strips up to 14 feet long so a good saw is a must. I'm into inlays so a band saw is a must. I'm not professional enough to say that a jig saw won't do the job, but I couldn't do it with a jig saw. I'm just learning routers and not able to give you good advice but Rockler on Coit has free classes and information. I personally think that you will have better results with a router table to go with the router. You also will need the large compressor. I do have nail guns but only use a staple gun on the yaks. As for the planer, I don't know how I got by without one for the first few years. A 12 inch planer is an absolute blessing when building these puppies. Building these little hybrids is my second vice next to fishing, and of course enables my fishing addiction.

let me know when and where, i'll bring a case! ahh, i got a router table, but the router i have is crappy! i just want a nice router so i can do some nice joints like dovetails and stuff. just googled the delta saw, impressive rip capability! 30"!! so you don't think a 32gallon with 150psi will cut it? i think the scfm is 6. i think the planer will be my downfall. you can't get a decent planer under $300.

Wow! That's beautiful, Don. Please post some pics with different views, especially the cockpit. What are you doing for a seat? Maybe you should build a small Adirondack Chair for it! Hehehe!!! That would definitely be comfortable!

On the contrary, the 32 gal is good. I found my plane on sale at Depot for something like $199.

man, thats one sweet ride. that is alot more special than anything hobie or native can produce. just to be able to say you build it with your bare hands is amazing, but to say you build it using your own design is crazy.
so what is that box in front of the seat for? looks like its for the native propel system. the kayak looks to be very wide, stability looks to be excellent!

Thanks, Jerry.
The box in the center is the storage console, I'm sure. But I do think this design would lend itself well to a Propel or Mirage drive.
Don, I would really love to come by and check that out up close. I'm only 15 minutes down the road from you.

The box is a console lined with Styrofoam and sealed so it can be used for a cooler. I am building the lid now. Artie, did I give you my phone number awhile back? If so give me a call.
