BoneHead braid isn't quite as bad about cutting you as Spiderwire or PowerPro is and it cuts easy with nail clippers.
I too have sustained some bad cuts in the bends of my fingers from pulling on braided line and I wasn't pulling hard either. Those cuts in the bends of your fingers take forever to heal as they keep breaking open bang
On crappie jigs, I just reel up tight with the rod and line straight, put my thumb on the spool and pull. 95% of the time the hook bends and comes free. If not, I wrap the line around my pliers handle.

+1 on Bonehead braid.

It -is- different from other braids. I really don't like any other braid (personal preference) for the reasons mentioned.
Love the increased sensitivity, strength and hi-vis. Like Todd says, it is easy to tie knots and cut it, and it doesn's slice your fingers.
Plus no memory and kinking like with mono, especially in the winter months.
Love that stuff.

Jacob, try reeling up the slack in your line to where your rod is pointing directly into the water. Then simply wrap your line around your rod a few times (right in front of your reel) and pull backwards with the rod (straight) enough to free the jig from the brush...no muss, no fuss, no gloves, no sticks necessary.

I am a braid guy for the last decade...Josh, over at Bonehead asked me to test his various mono's out compared to braid. I am in month eight of the test, and have formed some really interesting perspectives on this subject. This test notwithstanding, in heavy brush, cattails, heavy weeds, or on rocks...I like braid pure and simple. Now, because of the testing (in part), I have come to find that when I am fishing light brush, no brush, with floats, or around bridge columns, I like to use mono (or flouro.) In other words, if I am not in a situation where I will likely have to to re-tie often, then I am satisfied with using mono, but in the rough stuff, braid (no leader) is the only way to go.

Hope this information helps...

PS, I am not the best around fisherman by far (nor an expert) , but I can hold my own in most any crappie fishing situation.

50+ years of fishing has convinced me that braid is the only way to go for all my fishing. I'm not the best, nor an expert either, but it's what I like and use.

I've used braid with a mono leader for several years. I do believe that set-up is more sensitive than straight mono. I've had a chance to use the Bonehead braid for the last couple weeks and find it to be much more manageable than most. It seems to be a softer material that is very manageable on a reel. So to answer your original question; use what works best for you and your style of fishing, but I would recommend that you at least give a spool of Bonehead 10# braid a try.

Am I the only one that uses floro as my line of choice?

I've tried braid and spiderwire in the past, did not care for either.

I have a spool of Bonehead 12# Braid I am going to test when I finally get to fish again. I normally do not use 12# test but the diameter of this is small enough that it might work with finicky crappie.

I am going to rig it on a rod that I use to fish the bridges and brush piles. If I like it I will be switching over to braid.

I am also testing Bonehead mono, which I like so far. But my tests have been limited as I was restricted to fishing my slip most of the time since last October. I occasionally was able to use my pontoon but had such limited success I really can't make a decision on the mono.

I need to get back to catching 50-60 crappie a trip before I can decide one way or another. Note I did not say keepers, I said fish. I have as much fun catching and releasing the dinks as I do the keepers. I just like to catch and play large numbers of fish more than I do keeping score of how many I can take home. smile

I use braid when fishing deep water and brush piles. It is more sensitive and makes a big difference when fishing deep water. In shallow water I like hi-vis mono because shallow fish seem to be more line sensitive. I do not believe one is better than the other. It really boils down to how you fish.

+1.

braid in deep water makes a world of difference for sensitivity. I started using 8lb powerpro with a leader and love it for jigging.

10lb nanofil. It has the sensitivity of braid, smoothness of flourocarbon and super strong. Its expensive but well worth it.

All I use is the new Mr Crappie 6# HiVis mono. Spooled properly, it has the least memory of all the lines I've tried.
I'll never forget watching Mr Skinner pull a 22lb cat out from under a dock with mono back when he used mono and that's tough enough for me!

I use Bonehead, and the stuff is WAY strong and I'm using 2lb. Diameter I believe. It doesn't bend hooks, it breaks jig heads! Well, that's because I use those rigid sickle hooks. I LOVE the bonehead braid.

I found some 6 pound nanofil for $3.98 a spool. It really is good line but you have to be carefull when tying your knots. It's not worth $20 a spool but it was a bargain at $4.

Thanks for all the responses ill try some braid out. Bonehead has failed me i have 6 pound mono i got a monster hit the other night set the hook and broke off and i typically don't tie bad knots i might just be a bad spool. Im wanting to give Vicious High Vis line a try but i haven't found any around. Well looks like ill be testing a couple other lines here in the near future. thanks again y'all
