Rhonda aka Rho Rho and I made a quick evening run to catch some fish for the upcoming meals of kindness fish fry in Athens later this month. We found a school of very aggressive fish with lots of small whites mixed in. I was deadsticking a slab at 20' when I felt just a normal tick of a small fish. After I set the hook I wasn't sure if I had the fish or not because it felt really light and then the rod just doubled over and sat there. This fish didn't put up much of a fight at all and I assumed that a catfish had eaten a small yellow bass or something. We got the fish to the surface and for the first time in my life I caught a hybrid with a 9" white bass halfway down its throat. As you can see by the picture the hook was in the whites mouth but the hybrid couldn't spit it out. Funny thing is, it was the smallest hybrid we caught. You just can't fish too big of a bait in the spring time.

Great story. I did the same thing on Belton with very large smallmouth a couple of years ago. My white was 12" and went in the cooler. The smally lived another day.

Did you release the hybrid?

I've only seen hybrids do something similar to this once in my life. We were fishing on Richland Chambers amongst surfacing hybrids and saw several wounded yellow bass spinning circles like a hurt shad. The hybrids were coming up and smashing them and the only way we could catch them was to throw big topwaters next to a wounded yellow bass.



We released the hybrid to help control the white bass population.

I guess that explains some of the damage done to small stripers I catch at texoma. Cleaned one this morning with no pectoral fin on one side. He's already survived a brush with death before the jig got him.

Now that's a double.
