I'm an intermediate skilled fly tier and I'd like to tie up some flies for the Guadalupe and surrounding areas. What flies do you recommend? I'd appreciate a link to a pattern if you have one. Thanks.

I've only been a handful of times, but what I had most success on was a white San Juan worm or white gummy worm, especially if it was overcast. Last time I went I landed 14 nice trout on that fly.

Thanks. I hear people say its a subsurface river, but I never hear a pattern.

rojo midge in like a size 18 is good and super easy to tie. I've had the most luck with a plain ole bead head wooly bugger in either olive or thin mint (its an umpqua color pattern i think)

Here is a variation of the fishing fly described in the previous post; smaller size fishing fly and different hackle. Worked well on the smaller Stocker Trout this past December - COAF Guadalupana.

I think I've posted this before, but here's a link to the Guadalupe River TU website's Fly Tying Forum on the subject of "What's In Your Fly Box for the Guadalupe?":

https://www.grtu.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1307

If I were tying for the Guad, I'd tie lots of small midge pupas and emergers in sizes 18-22, in red, black, olive and brown. In addition, I'd tie some of Ron McAlpin's BWO Swimming Nymphs (which you can find on the GRTU forum) in size 18, San Juan worms in red, brown and orange and olive woolly buggers or Guadalupanas.

Have had a couple of good days on a GRHE bead head there...

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Had some fun fishing yesterday for Bluegill, Shellcracker, and other Panfish. All went for the COAF Guadalupana. Worked for Rainbow Trout; worked on Panfish, too! Lotta fun especially on a Four Weight Fly Rod. Yesterday's Video.

I've had great success with the fly linked from Living Waters Fly Shop in RoundRock. They are easy to tie. Olive or tan craft fur, a few strands of sparkle, white craft fur on a bead head hook. If you pass through stop by the shop. Great guys and they will tell you a few good spots to check out.
Also, Gruene River Outfitters is a great shop to check out before hitting the Guad.

The Guadalupana was my go-to streamer on the San Juan River late last month. Caught a bunch of nice trout on it, including a 19" brown. Very versatile fly.

Went with a Three Weight Rod and the COAF Guadalupana. Slower bite but managed three Bass and a little Bluegill. Still a good time; still beats work! Today's Video.

Still producing... the COAF Guadalupana. Total count this round - two Bluegill, one Sunfish, nine Bass, and a Happy Fisherman! Still no Bruisers; still lots of fun. Today's Video.
