It's all in the preparation. So prepping we are. Got the boat stripped down to nothing. Looks like a derelict we found in a field somewhere. Friend said it looked like we had a fire. Carpet's all out. Locker lids all off. Recessed TM well removed. Everything that was attached to the deck, consoles, or interior hull has been removed. Little more stripping of the old glue and she'll be ready for a new rug.
But first...wet sanding, compounding, polishing, waxing and sealing. Also doing running lights on the nose, locker lights everywhere, new trim panels around the instruments, anti-skid surface on the nose and rear, etc, etc, etc.
Can't wait to see her when we're done.
Now if the weather would just cooperate. It's brutal working outside in 30 degree temps and a north wind.
Tried to post pics but they were laying on their side. Have to get that figured out.
Any advice from those of you who have done this to your boat is always appreciated.

Finally got the pic thing worked out. Had to do some cropping before they worked right. You can see the oxidation on the hull. Top cap is really foggy too. Carpet is the original and is falling apart.
We've been working on it for about a week off and on...depending on the weather. Unfortunately the work has to be done outside.
More pics to come as we go through this.

It will get there. Take your time, I own a bass cat pantera and just installed carpet. Looks like a different boat with just new carpet.

Me too! We have found a couple things that make the carpet job a little easier. Acetone,goo-gone and wire stripping wheels for the grinder and drills. Those things take the old carpet mat and glue off pretty fast. Our goal is to be finished by the end of February. The list of little things we want to do keeps growing. We ordered 24 oz carpet through Rockwall Marine from Basscat. That will make a huge difference.
Mike at Lake Fork Fiberglass made the trolling motor foot control well for us. It's rounded at the front instead of having sharp corners like the aftermarkets and it matches the color an flake on the boat. Also had him make a 24" x 60" x 1/8" panel that matches the boat too. All the inserts on the instrument panels at the console, bow and around the glove box will be cut from that panel so they match the boat. Should be a clean look.
Miles to go before we fish...miles to go!

Lots of wet sanding to get that top cap looking shiney. Did mine last year.

I never had any luck with a polish job lasting very long.I ended up clear coating my 88 ProCraft.A good quality automotive clear will stay above the rub rail for many years.Polish below the rail.

looks like you are making good progress!! it is hard to wear out a basscat. i have a 92 and it is still in great shape. it still catches just as many fish as a new one. will be looking forward to the finished project.

I did a complete gel coat restore on the old blue ranger back in 2010, before I had my shoulder surgery grin It was a complete [censored]-whipping but the boat looked incredible afterwards. Anywhere you do not get ALL the oxidation out of the gel will start to fade again quickly, so be thorough with the wet sanding.

Here is a update. Wet sanding has began and carpet glue is all gone. Also have decided to replace the rub rail as well.

Nice project, will be great to see the finished product!

I did a similar project on my 1988 Skeeter in 2012. Be careful with the sanding and top cap, I made several mistakes in my venture. I purchased a very expensive clear gel coat ($150 per quart) and followed the manufacture instructions to the T. I then pulled her all apart and replaced the carpet. She looked great for about a month and then turned chalky, I wet sanded and buffed again per the manufacture...same chalky look back about 3 weeks later. I spent over a year scraping it off with a razor blade. The time, headache and money spent was a great lesson! There are a couple of great products out there than can really shine an old boat back up and keep it that way. I currently use the 303 product (Cabela's carries it in the boating section), I apply it about once a month and buff the boat about every three months. This keeps my boat looking good and keeps lake grime from sticking to it. I have been very pleased with both products and cannot really tell a difference in the out come between them.

I use 303 on the vinyl of my 2000 and it seriously looks like it just came off the showroom floor - never tried it on the glass - thanks for the tip !

Been a while since we did an update. Never done so much sanding in my life but finally got through the 1500 grit and started compounding last weekend. Used a foam pad and wasn't thrilled with the results. It seemed to leave a film on the hull and it didn't last very long. Got a wool pad today and went over the hull again. What a difference!
Tomorrow I hope to knock out the consoles and do any touch up. Once that's done it's time to polish. I'm looking forward to starting the pad and carpet.

Wool pad for the initial buffing after you sand with 800-1000-2000 and then use the foam pad to apply the polish and sealers. Then I apply wax by hand

We also are waiting on the Pro-Tec products to finish the gel coat so it still will get better.

We also decided to redo the trailer as well!

Slowly but surely moving forward. Now we're at the point where things are going back on the boat. The end is in sight. Started the carpet this week and hope to have it done next week. Got the rear deck finished yesterday. Waiting on the rest of the foam pad for the front deck but in the meantime we'll get all the carpet for the lids cut out and finish the carpet on the floor.

Trailer will get a light sanding and then a new finish. Not sure if we'll stick with the factory blue or go to a bed liner type product for a different look. Also plan to replace the winch and maybe a new jack. We noticed that the rollers are getting a little ragged so they'll be replaced too. We just rewired everything so that's all good.
Going to reinforce the fenders with some bracing so their more sturdy. One of them lost the support between the tires. Not sure when that happened. And we'll probably replace the carpet pads on the fenders with either non skid material or tread plate. Fenders will get the same finish as the trailer. We blew a tire last year and tore up one of the fenders. I re-glassed everything but never got around to painting.
New wheels would be nice but I don't think the budget can stand that kind of hit right now. We'll see.

I've done quite a bit of this stuff over the years.

It is VERY rewarding. You're going to be amazed at how great it turns out.

Good Luck!

Here are a few from yesterday. Back deck is 95% done just have to add the hinges, the gel coat is all done but probably going to add a few coats of wax to her, carpet is down on the floor just have to finish the edges and trim strips around it. Starting the front deck today and waiting on the rest of the pad to finish the deck. After that it's just putting all the little parts back on the boat. Then it will be off to the trailer and painting the engine.

Decided I would put a list together of everything we have done to this boat and doing to it:

Transom
Lower Unit
Powerhead
New Basscat Dash
Hot Foot
Blinker Style Trim
Trim Motor
Trolling Motor
Depth Finders
Side Scan
Hamby's
Hydrowave
L.E.D. lights (blue on the deck and white in all the compartments)
L.E.D. Navigation Lights
Fiberglass Panels (Passenger Console and Bow)
Fiberglass Recess for the trolling motor
Seats
Steering
Carpet
Deck Padding
Perko Locks
Wind Shields
Decals
Rub Rail
Complete Wet Sanding
Rod Locker Organizer

And for the trailer:

Trailer Lights
Trailer Paint
Winch
Fenders
Bunks
Wheels (later this year)

This is all I can think of right now, but I am sure that I'm missing a few things. This is also just the main stuff not including all the little things over the years. Boat is in great shape and my dad and I have had a lot of great memories in her and will for a long time forward. Some may say it is a waste to do all that work over the years but it has been worth it to see how she is looking now. Can't wait to have her all put back together.

Okay probably rude to ask but I'm about to do an overhaul to my boat! Not doing all that u are doing but somethings I'm doing differently! What is the ball park figure u will spend at the end of this project? That cat is gorgeous now and ur doing an awesome job!

Not rude at all. We'll probably have right around $1000 in it when we're done. Biggest expenses were the carpet. 24oz basscat at around $250. The foam pad for the front from the consoles to the bow around $150. Adhesives were about $120. You have to have a special one we got from Bird Song for the foam and weldwood contact cement for the carpet. Lots of sandpaper. New rub rail at $250. Wool and foam pads for the variable speed polisher. McQuires ultimate compound and polish and Protec Nu Paint and Sealer...$60.
The rest will be on the trailer which is mostly the bed liner spray.
All in all not too bad and way less expensive than a new boat. We're anxious to see her all put back together. Next is rewiring/ lighting all the storage compartments. We'll know we're done when the rub rail goes back on. That's the last thing on the list for the boat. Trailer will follow.

Wow. What a surprise. Pretty rig. I bought it new from Stracks. Had it 13 years and 400+ hours. I might have some pictures of it new but perhaps not.

I have been looking for your contact information to let you know that we are bringing her back to life. She has been such a great boat and going to be around a long time to come. Really glad I saw your post on the Basscat website all those years ago.

I got this picture from my dad today while I was stuck at work. Pad and Carpet is down on the nose. tomorrow if the rain holds off plan to add all the L.E.D. lights to all the compartments and put some of the small parts back on the boat.

Another quick update. Started putting the pad on the front deck lids. Little by little we keep checking things off the "to be done" list. Once the glue on the pads has a couple days to cure we'll put the carpet on everything.

Impressive work John and father!

I remember when you first got her - not a bad boat for its age at all, but I love to see those old kats restored, you will get a lot more years out of her.

We put the new rub rail on and added all new LED lights to all the compartments yesterday. Also have the deck lights on the boat as well. The blue tape on the rub rail is where the nav lights will be added this week. Took out a lot of the old wiring in the boat as well. We are on the final push now!!

I think she charged $300 or $350. She had them done in a week when we took it. She does really great work at a fair price. And thanks for the comments guys!

Thank you guys for all the comments. Dad just picked up more non-skid pad, new switches, new shifter cover and probably some more stuff. Hopefully the rain holds off sunday so we can get more work done. we still have to do:

LED Navigation Lights in the rub rail
Put the trolling motor on
Paint the engine
Add non-skid to the rear of the boat
Secure the hot foot
Finish the wiring so they are hidden
New battery trays
Clean bilge area
And a few other things to finish her up

This has been a really fun project. Shooting to have it for the most part finished up sunday.

We are really close to being done now. One more thing crossed off the list today with getting the nav lights in. If the weather is good tomorrow and Wednesday she should be ready for the water.
If you're going to put nav lights in the rub rail here's an idea that worked for me to get straight cuts. I made a jig from 1" ID PVC. Routed out the slot for the lights and taped it on the rub rail as a guide. You can run the razor knife right along the PVC and it won't move off track because the PVC is so hard.
As you bend the PVC to the curve of the rub rail it tends to spread a little so you need to tape the center of the cutout to keep it in line. No big deal.

You'd be surprised, it may get people lined up at your door to have boats redone like this. I'd be interested to know the cost for sure. I have a 1999 Cobra 201d, not in bad shape but would love to know if I could afford to have this done or not.

Looking at a cost summary for something like this is very misleading. If you take parts cost alone, it looks very reasonable. But, when you start adding in the hundreds of man hours it takes from start to finish and figure an hourly rate to pay someone to do it for you, it doesn't look so reasonable any longer. smile

I've always been a project oriented person. I can always do something cheaper than I can hire it done, but, I end up with too many projects and not enough time.

I guess it's called a labor of love. wink

A labor of love for sure! When we decided to do this project it was do it right or don't do it at all. That boat has given us some amazing times on the water and we thought it was time to give her a face lift.
We knew it was going to be a lot of work but never imagined just how much.If you have the time it's a rewarding experience to do it yourself. We had never done a project like this but dove in here we are....a few days away from being done...at least with the boat. Next project is the trailer.

it's been a while since we did any updates. ya'll probably thought we hasd gone to the big lake in the sky. ironically that's close to being true. in january i was diagnosed with cancer and that really slowed things down. chemo seems to be having the desired effect.
been working on the boat as time, weather, and my endurance have allowed. she's getting there. boat is done. trailer is just about finished, and i've started to dig into the motor. i can't believe it should be as hard to start as it is so i'm flushing all the fuel lines, replacing some, checking the choke/primer solenoid, voltages everywhere, spark, etc etc etc. hopefully i don't dig myself a deep hole and have to cart a basket case evinrude 200 xp to someone who knows what they're doing.
thought i'd throw some more pictures on here to show you where we are with this. looks like plans to fish the spawn have been pushed out to hopefully enjoy some fall fishing.

What did you use to paint the trailer?

after prep of sanding, wire brush on the drill for the rusted areas and a rust remover called krud kutter i used rustoleum auto primer and top coated with tractor, truck and implement enamel from tractor supply. i wanted something more durable than paint but didn't want to go the bed liner route.
i will tell you the tti enamel is a bear to work with. if you apply it the least bit too thick it won't set up and cure. the surface layer dries and seals the coat which doesn't let the underlying stuff dry and it turns to paste. i learned this the hard way. had to strip the fenders twice before i got it right. the stuff is really sensitive to humidity and probably should be sprayed with the hardener additive. i rolled it onto get a textured finish but, like i said, the least bit too heavy and you're in trouble. my guess is that i wouldn't have had the trouble i did if the humidity hadn't been so high.
it's also time consuming because there's at least 24-48 hours curing time between coats. the pics show you what can happen. not pretty!

I just need to get some free time to come help. Hopefully a little more work and we are done. Going to add a new whinch to the trailer. I also want to add the L.E.D. kit to the trailer so it glows blue on the highway but not sure I can talk my dad into it!!

you can do some trailer bling if i can do some airbrushing on the cowling. not sure how the local law enforcement folks would like the blue lights on while going down the road.

it's amazing what a little elbow grease and some 1000 grit wet sandpaper will do to 21 year old wheels.

WOW!!! Incredible job on EVERYTHING!! Carpet looks better than new and the trailer looks great too!! Don't know if I would have had the patience, but I have taken 1500 and 2000 wet sand to my 2001 Champion and it's amazing the scratches and rubs that disappear!!

That is unreal! I've got a 1997 Triton that we've babied and kept in the garage since it was new. And this is the first older and cleaner boat I've ever seen. That boat looks amazing. Thanks for keeping us involved in your project. Best of luck with treatment and we'll be praying for you.

we really appreciate all the good words about the work. just a little more work on the trailer and then the motor and we should be ready for fall fishing.
john mentioned the engine cowlings. they've been sanded, primed, three coats of top coat and shot with three coats of clear. i'm struggling with doing any wet sanding, compunding, and buffing on them. they look pretty good and i'd hate to mess them up. started cleaning up the lower part of the motor yesterday. figured we may as well paint it too while we're at it.
it is nice to stand back and see the work coming together.

The engine is RUNNING again!!! We cleaned all the fuel lines this morning and she cranked right up!! Was a good feeling for sure, dad and I were smiling like a kid on Christmas morning. Going to put all the plastics back on her tonight and take some more pictures!! We are almost there to put her on the water!

thanks fouz. thanks for the compliment and the good wishes.
well moment of truth. we flushed all the fuel lines and recirc lines, checked the flow to all the carbs, took the primer solenoid apart and cleaned it, checked the grounds, checked the fuel flow from the tank to motor, put the key in, hit the primer, turned on the fuel pump, and and and and...eureka!!! she popped on the first turn of the flywheel and started after a few more hits. purring like a kitten.
does it count as a cold start if it's 90 degrees outside?
so that's another big step forward in getting back on the water. gonna try to get everything buttoned up today on the motor...depends on the heat.
i need to go to the pond behind our place and see if i remember how to cast. could be ugly. i bet the home owners assoc would freak if we dropped her in the pond.

man it was awful out there today working on the boat but we kept at it. got the cowlings back on, mounted the new winch, cleaned up the wiring on the motor, etc, etc. need to put the lights back on the trailer and she'll be ready for the road. already have a few more things lined up to do in the fall.

i wasn't going to sand and compound the cowlings but this morning i said what the heck. if i screw em up it's just more sanding, primer, paint and clear coat. anyway i'm glad i did. what a difference. now it has that mirror finish. if your going to try a project like this and need encouragement...just give us a call. we've probably either done it right or messed it up and had to fix it.

Little update on her. Have her at Lake Fork Fiberglass getting a few cracks fixed on her and a few holes filled. Also picked up our prop from Steve at http://www.stevescustomprops.com/ today and decided to get a new jack plate from Steve as well!! We went with the Rapid Jack Magnum 8" set back. Few more weeks and she is almost ready to go fishing!!

ok i have a confession to make on behalf of john and myself. we are addicts. yep, sad but true. we cant stop ourselves from tinkering with the boat. is there a bassboaters anonymous? we may need some counseling.
what he didn't tell you was we stopped by rockwall marine...big mistake...and saw some stuff on the new cats that we just couldn't resist. sooooo. our p2 will be sporting the new black mounting support for the upper jackplate bolts in the splashwell, the new pop top gas caps will be replacing the screw in version that we have now, and a new trim piece on the spashwell.
hey it's no problem. we can stop anytime we want. no really we can.
left to do will be rod holders in the rod locker, rod holders for the back seater ( hey thats me) finish sanding the bottom half of the motor and painting, new batteries, addition of a standard cranking battery. probably a new side mount jack and new steps on the trailer to make it easier to get in and out of boat when we launch. also putting diamond plate in the step areas of the trailer.
one biggy may the removal of the starboard side fuel tank. it would give us more room for the batteries and charger and better access to the all the wiring coming from the front. the way we fish anymore doesn't require a 52 gallon capability. one 26 gallon tank will be plenty and then some. if we take it out we'll keep it just in case anything changes. one nice thing about a cat is being able to remove the fuel tanks without tearing the boat apart. actually its really easy.
oh well, now that ive come clean i hope we can avoid an intervention.
oh i almost forgot, im working on redesigning the dash and getting all new faria gauges. oh no, its starting again.
honestly though, doing all this work for the most part ourselves and being fortunate enough for it to be coming out looking like it does is an unbelievably satisfying and rewarding experience. id recommend it to anyone.

What a great job. I had two Pantera 11's in the past. Still wish I would have hung on to the first one I ever had. They have always been great boats.

Please let us know date/time/ramp for the relaunch. I'm sure some would like to share in the joy of seeing this beauty get back on the water.

this looks great. You might put it on BBC under bassboat restoration there are many people on the fence about doing something like this, myself included. You guys have a great boat that will forever be in your hearts, I wish my dad and I could do something like this. Maybe I can do it with my two boys

got the reworked 24 raker last week and tomorrow we're picking up the new 8" rapid jack magnum. the early model cats have a short 4 bolt jack plate while the newer models have the redesigned 6 bolt. it's obviously longer than the old style and goes farther down on the transom for more stability and less torque on the upper half of the transom. cats are also limited to an 8" setback on their jack plates (per the factory spec) but none of that is a problem for steve and hydro dynamics, hes building a new 6 bolt plate for us with an 8" set back! cant wait to see it and get it on the boat.
just a few more things to do now and we'll be ready for the cooler weather and fall fishing.
have spent the last few weeks going through all the hard baits building new skirts, tieing new dressed treble hooks for the jerk baits, re powdering jig heads, relining reels, a lot of new hooks...all the good stuff. also got a bunch of crank baits that i'm getting ready to air brush. god i love doing this kind of stuff!! more pics soon.

it is that! the guys at steves custom props in quitman who make these hydro dynamic jack plates are real craftsmen. great design and nothing but the best materials. and the work they do on props is the best around.

The amount of labor and patience you guys put into this project is awesome.
You'll did a beautiful job.

sent you a pm. thats a great question because we got stuff from a lot of different places. might be helpful to anyone getting ready to do a project like this.
carpet/ basscat boats
deck padding/ pro tech mats marine
adhesives/ bird song for the mat and walmart for the weldwood contact cement for the carpet
sand papers, 3m compound, mcguires/ pepboys has the best selection
fender and trailer paint/ tractor supply. i used the truck, tractor and implement paint
rub rail, courtesy lights, toggle switches, non skid material, name decals/ bass cat boats
nupaint, sealant/ pro-tec
jack plate and prop/ steves custom props-hydro dynamic jack plates in quitman texas
deck lights, nav lights/ hoodoo electronics or blue water
all the basscat products came through rockwall marine. tommy and the guys are the best!
as i think of other places i'll put them up. some others for miscellaneous stuff were west marine, lowes, elliots hardware (if they dont have it, it doesnt exist), oriellys auto parts, academy outdoors, grainger industrial supply

I just recently got my Triton TR21 all back together after redoing it. I went a little further though. I sanded down to the glass and repainted a different color above the rub rail and inside of boat. Had the carpet installed at Lake Fork. I did all the other work mostly by myself. Took about 8 months because I had some medical issues thrown in. It is not yet perfect but I like the looks much better now. Good luck with you kitty.

wow. taking her down to the glass. now that's some serious work. i can relate to the medical issues. it's a great feeling when it all starts coming back together. seems like there's always something else that would be cool to do. would love to see some pics of the work.

Yes. Once I got it dialed in. Because of this setup if the day is going to be on a lake that is windy it's so easy to change motor height.

yep. put it in a couple years ago when the digital stuff started going away. it's a cleaner look. eventually i hope to change out the instruments in the dash and will relocate that panel to the other side. not as tight a fit.
the dash is backed up with a piece of solid wood and you have to cut the whole right side out to put in the new stuff and then make a panel (or use the original piece) to hold the gauges and cover the hole. the trick is to leave enough wood around the edges to be able to anchor the cover panel. ive never been thrilled with how it looks. it will look a lot more factory when i redo the dash.

Yeah the only thing on my digital one that works is the tach. And the rest of it is on the fritz. How long did it take you to install?

i assume your dash is built the same as ours. i'd plan on three hours or so. if you don't have to do much cutting it may take less time. allen in parts at bcb is a great help. he'll make sure you get all the right parts and pieces for your boat. the wiring takes more time than anything else.
you'll lose some of the instrumentation when you make the change. if i remember right the kit comes with a tach ,speedo, volt and fuel. you'll need to add the water pressure. if you had them you'll lose engine, oil and water temp.

Sounds good. Thanks for the help. And I have a water pressure gauge already so I would reuse it. As long as the kit came with tach, speedo, fuel, and trim I'd be good.

Well we will have new pictures tonight. Have the jack plate on, new style gas caps, one gas tank out and going to counter the weight with a new battery layout, cleaned the bilge area and have the new motor mount plate from bass cat on. Few more things left going to get the new steering wheel and get the engine all tuned up. So give us a little time and we will add pictures today.

here's a few pics from today's work.
tank removal, clean out the bilge, new diamond plate, new 8" jack plate from steve's custom props and hydrodynamic jack plates, and the tuned 24p raker that steve did for us too.

Man, after a long and intensive 'labor of love', you have a 'NEW' Bass Cat! Very nicely done. Looks as if with few exceptions, nothing was left untouched.
Very nice......Kudos on pride and professionalism in your new rig! She's ready for many years to come on the water soon with hopefully a soon to be added 'SAL'!!

here's the finished install of the new pop top gas caps. required quite a bit of cutting of the deck to get them in. the vent tube comes out through the cap and not through the vents in the splash well like the original screw ins. we had the old vent holes glassed up to clean up the splash well. turned out nice. totally unnecessary because the old ones worked fine but if you've followed this thread you know we're all about updating the ole girl. thats why we changed the transom reinforcing bar in the splash well to the new blackened basscat one. looks cool. actually it was needed because the new jack plate is a six bolt design and we needed another bar for the extra bolts.
motor work starts monday.

This has been and continues to be a great project for us. Everyday we come up with another idea, looks like the new steering wheel from bass cat is my next order. I really am glad we decided to take this project on and it is a great feeling to have looking at it. just standing on the front deck last night was awesome. Next year will be a fortrex for sure and who knows what else. We are trying to be on the lake next weekend and will be a great feeling making that first cast when it is to this point. Doubt we will ever be done with this project but it sure is a fun one.

after pulling the starboard tank to clean that area out and get access to the wiring we debated on putting it back. we wanted to add a cranking battery so it stayed out and we used the new open space for batteries. we really didnt need the extra 26 gallons of gas anymore because now we fun fish most of the time and rarely use more than 10-15 gallons on any given trip. we figured the weight distribution with the new config and it looks pretty balanced.
also finished up the diamond plate yesterday.

It seems like everyday we see or find something else we want to do.

quick update on the '93. finally had her out on the water a couple weeks ago. we could really tell the difference the 8" jack plate made. much improved on the hole shot and the handling was very different. seemed to slide more in turns and was much more responsive.
got a skid plate for the jack plate from steve last week and put it on. this is a plate that covers the bottom of the jack plate to help the boat get on plane and roll the nose over. haven't had it on the water to see what the difference is because as usual...the ole evinrude wasn't in the mood to start. after having all the electrical checked out we found out that the voltage to the coils is all over the place and the quick start isn't working. that means poor spark and a new power pack. get that on tomorrow.
i think we're finally running out of things to do. last big project will be the dash and instruments sometime next year.
