BC,
We don;t run trotlines from the yaks.
Its not safe. The yak turns too much and you WILL get SNAGGED!
I use these style jugs & have success with them.

ALWAYS keep a knife tethered too you especially when running trots or jugs.
Good luck cheers

i use 1 gallon bleach jugs. i fill regular biscuit pan with lead to make.the weights. i put about 40 ft of line on them with a swivel about every 5 feet to attach the hooks to. i keep the line.in the bottle and let out how ever much i need for the weight to hit the bottom leave the rest in the bleach jug and screw the cap back on. add reflective.tape and address so they are legal and your all set. its a ton of fun and pretty easy. you will need a boga grip or rapala lip grip to make it easier to snatch up nice.cats..

I second what Zombie said! Trotlines from the yak can be very dangerous!
I use the same type juglines that are in his link. I've done real good on eater sized cats with my jugs from the yak.

I've run trotlines from a yak in a river before. The current made it very difficult to control what I was doing. If you fish a river, limb-lines are the way to go out of a yak. You can handle to fish in two ways: tie up to the branch and haul the gear in, or use a quick release knot and fight the fish as you drift downstream (less than ideal in a strong current, but very reasonable if it's slack).

reflective tape makes the jug easy to find. white spray paint/tape makes them legal.

make sure you have some type of gps tracking system. I was dropping some jugs and when i went to collect them, couldn't find several of them. It was a windy day and when i looked at my gps, i had drifted off my location by 100yds. on a windy day, its almost impossible to locate them unless you are about 20yrds away.

instead of melting lead, i just used spare bricks when my house was built. i just put on a quick release clip so i can better manage the jug from the brick. a buddy of mine told me that he had a cat drag his jug line across the lake because he didn't have enough weight on it.

i used a propane torch and a big ladel then poured it in the molds. i have a 10 lb melting pot now. turkey fryer baseand a pot will work also. wear goggles and gloves if you melt your lead. a big biscuit weight about 3 lbs and is shaped like and anchor. i use coat hanger for the eyelets. makkng weights gives you an excuse to hang out in the garage also!

I run trotlines out of my kayak all the time. It is not hard, you just need to be aware of where the hooks are.
