So this myth and the one about the wind out of the east they bite the least etc... I don't believe in that [censored]. I have wacked em in 15 mph east winds and the cows were laying down. What weather do you believe takes a hard tole on bass? Barometric pressure is what I think slows em down.

Ya just cant figure em out on that one and anybody that thinks he can is fooling himself.Dad set a lake record on Benbrook in 1958 with a 9# native bass it was in the middle of a long freeze in january and had to make his old LoneStar break ice leaving ramp to get to open water.

I've had old timers tell me it's the wind. I call BS. Now it is different in the winter on some lakes.

The reason they say an east wind is bad for fishing is because an east wind is usually associated with a barometric change. Which we all know can shut down fish.

That is exactly right. Its very predictable on Fork, a front moves in, you usually get a North wind with some clouds afterward, then that second day with bluebird skies, high pressure and a light breeze out of the east comes along. If a fisherman hasn't figured out those are tough conditions, they haven't fished Fork enough laugh I'm always honest with my customers about this and usually give them the option of rescheduling if it is during the slower season. Now, I have had those oddball days when they do bite pretty decent in those conditions, but its usually in winter when the sunshine gets them more active. Those days are the exception, not the rule. It has nothing to do with the wind, it is all about barometric pressure changes I believe.

Now as for the cows... the other day I passed a field and every cow in that field was up and eating. Then, on the other side of the road I saw a field and every single cow was laying down. This clued me in that they must be biting on one side of the lake and turned off on the other... rolfmao

If you think the east wind doesn't kill the bite usually, you're wrong. I have years of data in my log and probably 90% of the time when the wind is from the east, the bite is off. And as stated, it's usually in combination with high pressure or post frontal conditions. Wind from the east, fish bite the least is 100% true in East Texas.

Tough fishing (usually) = high barometric pressure, full moon, + less than 50 deg. cold water.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

the "risen" barometric disturbs the fish's swim bladder, so the shallower fish get tight to cover, its their security blanket. drop a bait on their head and some will bite it, but they will not chase it. Deeper fish are not affected as much, but a sharp rise will shut them down too.

I have found two things to be true:

1. Cows laying down, hard to catch a fish.
2. Cows not laying down, still have a hard time catchin' fish.

Oh, maybe it's just me. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

I have on occasion, caught some fish with an east wind if other conditions were really good. But I have seen it shut the fish down a lot too, especially if the conditions weren't ideal to begin with. I also attribute it to confidence. After being aware of the east wind theory and seeing it in action for so many years, I don't fish nearly as hard in those conditions.

BTW- Fishing the best when the wind from the west! bannana2
