I mainly fish the timber for crappie in the summer. I won't go if its cloudy because I have had too many bad trips.
I think the crappie are less likely to stack up in the timber on cloudy days. I guess they don't need the camoflauge of the shade so they are scattered about rather than hunkering down in the shade. Do any of ya'll have the same belief?

My best days of fishing are during rainy cloudy weather. That is true especially in the summer after days of bright sunlight. On this past Sunday, we fished all morning in the rain and ended up with 52 nice keeper crappie and I only caught them in 3 spots.

Guess that answers that! I had been wondering the same thing. How do you fish in the rain, timber, bp's, shoot docks, etc?????

I fish brush piles just like I do when it isn't raining.

Why do you restrict yourself to summer fishing? Crappie bite the year around.

If it is a light rain I will sometimes fish from my slip. However if it is a heavy rainstorm I don't fish.

I don't use my boat on the lake when it is raining unless it comes up unexpected. I don't like lightning nor do I care much for being wet. If I am on the lake when it started raining I will head for the nearest bridge or my slip, which ever is the closest. smile

I don't mind fishing when it's snowing but that doesn't happen much here. smile

I bass fish from November thru early May.
My best days for Bass Fishing have always been cloudy rainy days. But as far as Crappie go, when it's cloudy I've had bad luck.

Once you have caught a crappie how can you ever go back to fishing for bass? smile

We catch a lot of bass during the year but it is due to the bass hanging around where we are fishing for crappie.

They don't hit my jigs often but they won't leave my wife's minnows alone. smile They do hit the small spinner lures I use for crappie from time to time.

Here is how I can go back for bass! I fish a private lake mostly - see piture below, I fish Athens in April, and Ray Roberts in May.

YOU EAT BASS? That will get you banned for life from the bass forum!

Personally I think crappie taste much better than bass so I throw all the bass back as trash fish. smile

Yeah, I gave up Bass fishing a year ago, crappie only, but have managed to catch some of my biggest bass since. Nailed this one on a 10' jigging rod, 4lb test and a 1/16 oz pink / chart jig last November. Also caught a couple other jigging over 6 on the same setup. This one went 10.3.

Caught several crappie that day as well. I love fishing in the rain.
