Thru my years of fishing I've seen some real deformed crappie. I had one last weekend that looked as though it had a wedge type slice taken out of its back like maybe it had been hit by a boat propeller or a big egrit had taken a bite out of it when it was a babby, but it was all healed up, no open flesh wound what so ever. And then there are the ones with the crooked spin. I've caught lots of those thru the years. That one in your picture there has been pecked at and pecked at by bream. When my kids were young I got them an aquarium and put about 4 bream in it. We would watch how the smaller more agile bream would come up from behind the bigger perch and peck at their tail fin constantly and the bigger perch had parts of their tail fins missing.

yes sir I agree on some of those points ...I think there are numerous ways for a fish to develop wrong , I see the broken back syndrome in other fish as well , and some fish are fin nippers as well , but in open water a fin nipper at best kan nip one here and there along the way , an aquarium environment is the ole caged animal syndrome thing . like when a rat turns on the snake and kills it in captivity , I look fish over very very carefully and I am pretty sure this fish grew this tail this way , I know it could be lots of things and its a possibility something damaged it , but it sure looked like it grew that way to me ...
hopefully I get it on the jig again , it will go to the state biologist if I get so lucky and it don't get so lucky ...
plus the elongated top and bottom fins seemed quite pronounced for a ...I think white crappie ?
maybe its some sort of hybridized crappie ?
I really aint sure what the heck that was all about ...

Don't see to may deformed Crappie. The water must be lacking in minerals/nutriments or that fish is just plane deformed. Nice report with information. Thanks for sharing Ketchn.

Thats the Trinity for ya....there are three (yes 3) landfills that operate right on the edge of the Trinity here in my area....

yawl have to see todays trinity episode ...
