What do you guys down south mean by "perch"?
I grew up in Michigan and always think of a perch as this, [img:left]http://[/img]
Just trying to learn the lingo still.....is a "perch" down here also call brim?

Man, you need a degree to properly identify all the sunfish in Texas...
TPWD has a decent fish id page...google texas sunfish...

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

So would perch be all the bluegill type looking fish? Those yellow perch taste so good compared to anything IMO I just hate to put it in with the bluegill category of perch fishes.

In Colorado that is what we call a perch... a bluegill is always like this body shape (with variations of patterns and colors)

a sunfish looks like this

but really, from what I understand, they are all "Centrarchidae." which is a family of fish that includes 37 species of fish, including both perch, bluegill, and even bass (I am pretty sure even the South American Peacock Bass fall into that family)

read Sun-Fish if you wanna know more...

I wish Texas had yellow perch like you do in Michigan. They have a reputation for being very tasty. Our blue gill, perch, sun fish, brim, et.all are good table fare also.

The south american pecock bass is a cichlid from the family cichlidea. It is the same kind of cichlid that is sold as an aquarium fish.

I grew up in Texas fishing for brim, sunfish, "perch", cherry-gill, blue-gill and rock bass. We would gut them, de-scale them and fry them whole. In spite of all the bones you had to eat around, they were tasty - with fries, beans, cornbread and fresh onion. BTW how did this thread get on the white bass/hybrid/striper section? LOL!

I posted it here because I hear lots of guys using shad and "cut perch" for bait. I was just curious as to what type of fish the cut perch was. Lol

The Boys in Louisiana take Brim, stomp them while on the ground to push the innards out and fry them whole scales and all .They are referred to as Buffalo Chips. Not too bad , provided a number of ice cold adult beverages have been consumed.

You're right.... This is soooooo confusing. Bream, pronounced "brim," are sunfish of a million different varieties. You will hear just about every sunfish variety called a perch or a bluegill no matter what type it is.

We grew up calling these perch which I now know isn't correct. But if dad and grandpa called them perch, that's what they were! wink

Yes it is. I had a feeling that's what "perch" were, just wanted to see if I was correct in my feeling.

Ha, I grew up the exact opposite in colorado. A "perch" was a yellow perch, and every type of sunfish was just a "bluegill".
