It has a one way bearing on the shaft the handle atttaches too. So that the handle never goes backwards and you get instant hook sets. Remember how some of the reels would turn backwards till the dog ear would catch? This one doesnt do that.

Im sure i made that as clear as mud. LOL

I have that reel and it isn't instant anti reverse meaning the handle does reverse a little before it catches. This is for crankbait fishing and treble hooks. The delay helps so you get a better hookset instead of pulling the hooks out of the fish's mouth too early.

I talked to Lew's about them and asked why they offered two versions of this real with instant anti-reverse and the one which has a little slack in it like the old reals. They mentioned the additional slack allows for a crank bait fisherman to detect a strike easier as the instant anti-reverse would absorb the sensation of a strike more. Makes sense and I have had my eye of one of these for a while, just need to bite the bullet!

I have one of the original BB-1 bait casting reels from some 26 years ago. Can't say I was smart enough to select it myself but was guided into it by one of the sales people.
It still performs GREAT. I use it a lot still and and very impressed with the performance...
BTW: Can anyone tell me what the ratio is on this old reel? Is is marked some way that I could tell?

there were a few different model bb-1's available through the years.

if you look up exactly what it is, bb-1,bb-1g,bb-1ng etc you should be able to find it out.

could be from a 4.3 to a 5.4 iirc.

i think mine is a 4.3 but i ha.ven't picked it up in forever, what's funny is that those were advertised as High speed reels back then!!!

Its for better feel, not hook sets. Search David Fritts BB1 and he explains how it works. He designed it.

mark the spool , turn the handle one time around...count the revolutions of the spool.....that's the gear ratio
