My family and some friends are going down to Surfside Beach (near Galveston) this weekend and have a house on the beach. Initially we were going to surf fish, but two of us bought kayaks last weekend and are thinking of taking those.

Who has fishing down there from a kayak and is it worth taking then down there? We have plenty of surf rods, rigs, ect to fish from the surf, but i hear of people dropping bait even further out using a kayak. And how is the trolling from the kayak?

Thanks Guys

What kind of kayak did you get? just out of curiosity.

This.

Also, there's great bay fishing in Chirstmas bay too.

best to go with someone more experienced.
it can be good for sure. havent trolled there.
only used fresh dead & cut bait.
trolling in and just beyond the surf should be good if the weed is not present.

I grew up in Lake Jackson (which is very close to Surfside). That's my old stomping grounds and miss living there very much.

But anyway...heck yeah bring the yak!! If the surf is moderate, why not paddle out some and see what you can catch. Also as mentioned Christmas Bay, the Intercostal and other water ways are all along that area. Just don't go out to the San Luis Pass area. The currents there can be very nasty and a lot of people drown out there each year. I would not recommend that area for a person relativly new to yakking.

Take everything, never know what will be the best way to fish until you get there.

Well the waves were way to big for a couple of beginners to go out off the surf and we got hit by the weed coming in the tide so fishing went to the pooper, but still had a good time with family and friends

Yeah the weed was ridiculous at High Island this weekend. A mile out there were mats of it over half an acre big, and lines of it 300+ yards long. I've never seen anything like it. I was rebaiting every 15 minutes and reeling in 10 lbs of weed at a time. I caught a baby 2 foot blacktip, and didn't even know he was on the hook until I got it to the boat. He was covered by a huge clump of seaweed. Ridiculous.

I stayed on the beach last year just a couple of units up from the public beach off 8 Mile Road. Could'nt believe how much seaweed was washing up. Ended up fishing around South Deer Island straight across 8 Mile Rd on the bay side near Sportsman Rd. Its only a 10 minute drive.

Another day of high winds.

The seaweed was well over a foot thick in places.

The light in picture is the closest rig from what I could tell. I took a rain check. Getting too old for this kinda [censored]. grin
