Wow, that is a crazy story! Glad you made it back ok and obviously learned some lessons. I grew up on the coast and know all too well how powerful the gulf can be. Those currents will always be stronger than you and they will always win. Also, be glad you caught that yak when it started drifting away. The wind will blow it non-stop as you, on the other hand, will tire quickly.
All I can suggest as I have on many of my other post...ALWAYS practice deep water re-entry on your yak!! Whenever someone buys a new yak, to me the first thing you should do is find some calm water that you can take it to and purposely flip it, re-enter and then repeat several times until you are comfortable with the whole procedure! The last thing you want to do is learn how to do a deep water re-entry in the open gulf!!! It's not a matter if you will flip your yak, its a matter of when. Also the waves can be deceiving from the shore sometimes. They always look much smaller in the shallows than they actually are. A good way to tell even before you venture out is to count the number of wave breaks before the shore. If the waves are only breaking on the first and second sand bar you should be ok. If you can see them breaking out on the third, fourth and even fifth bar...don't plan on going BTB in a yak that day.

Not an idiot at all. He is a great dude welcome to fish in our squad any time. It shows the level of commitment he has. No one has done anything without making a few mistakes. If you have you aren't doing enough.

When you do it again come in backwards to the beach. It works.
When all of your stuff washes up on the beach that's called a yard sale.
Get an EPIRB if you're going to do that again.

Do you have one you'd recommend? I have heard about the SPOT but not sure if it does the same thing. Sorry to go side tracked but this might prove helpful.

Heck yeah brother, it's crazy how PERFECTLY the Corpus trip went and then how HORRIBLY the Galveston leg went. Ying and yang I guess. Considering this was my second time in the ocean, first time fishing for any of these fish, and first time in my new kayak, I could not be more pleased with how I did as far as the fishing goes. Considering I've been fishing for a little over a year, I'd say I'm starting to get the hang of it. But I've been making decisions for 25 years. Not sure when I'll get better at that.

When it comes to kayak fishing offshore we are all given a handful of "stoopid" cards to play. The key is to use them sparingly and not all at once. Bobby seems to be pushing all in on every hand.

No worries Bobby! I'm sure everyone here has had a "WTF was I thinking" moment in kayaking and Life in general. It's how we learn, the old "I told you so" never seems to make sense until you actually experience it yourself! I remember my trip out in dead of winter when Efraincan flipped my pelican, I and He both knew the hazards but......."It'll never happen to us"...... WE BOTH NOW UNDERSTAND THE RISK of using a pelican in winter and kayak fishing in freezing waters! Look forward to the video

Yeah man, when I was reflecting on the day that night I thought about trying to flip that Outback had the water been freezing. I've heard you go into a mild shock usually when you hit freezing water, and obviously your muscles immediately begin to tense up. I can't even imagine bud.
