And it does seem Lowes has them in stock. Might be a good project until these storms subside...

Funny-I just did this exact thing last weekend! Tested it on a midweek trip and it works well!

I like it. Plus you don't have to cleat your boat. And if rigged properly, you could anchor and dry laundry at the same time.

Neato Needs a backup handle hand crank in case it jams.

I tried the same thing, but got mine at home depot, it ended up in the trash after the spring not pulling the cord in anymore. I've been using the big game system for about two years now and nothing really beats it to this day.. And amozon has them on sale for 10.29 today..wooot

This is definitely an area I need improvment. My anchor rope ends up in a giant rats nest.

After I bought mine I ran across a thread about using a heavy duty dive reel. The upside was WAY more line, like 150' worth! There are a bunch on eBay but I'm not sure which one is the best. They're cheap enough to compete with the clothesline reel though.

And amozon has them on sale for 10.29 today..wooot After using the Flexi brand dog leash a few times, durability was my main concern with them and now this Minky clothes line. They aren't made to secure anchors. I bet after time, the spring mechanism within the casing will eventually fail. I ended up going with the Magna Lift system too. It's heavy duty and intended to raise and lower weapons and other heavy equipment to and from treestands. The plastic casing is very durable. The only downside is the rope length, only 30'. You lose about 5' of rope from mounting point to the bow/stern where your anchor sits. It still leaves 25' of length, which is plenty for me. I don't often fish in depths more than that. I also prefer the zig zag cleat for more support. I installed 2 of them, on each end of my yak. I love having the dual (bow/stern) anchor system. Few pics of my setup:

Tried a few retractable (spring) loaded reels and all broke after less than a season. Just can't use spring steel without it rusting. A manual crank reel like the dive reel is your best bet.

I ended up using a plastic reel made for kites LOL. Worked pretty good but in the long run, I don't use it. I found it more of a hassle than what is worth. I can wrap a rope much faster than reeling it in.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I was going to purchase one of the lowes / home depot models, and instead grabbed the last one of those big game ones.

some good techniques being used in that video IMO. thanks for sharing. mounting that on the hi-lo seat would not work for me though especially on a windy day. i gotta say, i do like jrbgator's set up much better.

Gator - I think you have the better setup and it's clean. I thought most people added an extra 5 foot (or whatever is required) of line so that the reel can still hold the length it came with. They do a splice the way yakfin's video showed......it would be an easy way for you to get another 5ish feet.
Question for those who use such systems.....do you expect the reel to actually retrieve the anchor or do you assist it by hand?

I haven't gotten to use mine yet but, I have ~100ft of paracord on an extention cord real, I have 2 floats attached to the reel so it will float and a zig zag cleat attached to gear track. The way I envision it working is:
1) Set anchor 2) Feed rope through anchor trolley ring. 3) Move anchor trolley to desired position. 4) Attach rope to cleat 4) Throw reel out in the water.
With it setup this way all I have to do is release the rope from the cleat and the rope will pull back through the ring and be floating in the same spot when I'm ready to be anchored back up. This keeps the line from tangling, line outside the boat, and a quick release option if you need to free a snag or chase a fish down.

Agree. I didn't want to attach anything to my hi lo seat. I am still able to use the yak side handles. My magna lifts are just tied on so I can easily lift them out of the handle slots, giving me access to the handles. I'm also using 5 lb neoprene dumbbells as anchors. Works great so far.

Well, I got my zig zag cleat and my big game retractor, but I'm so fickle that I can't think of where I want to permanently attach this cleat to

Well, I got my zig zag cleat and my big game retractor, but I'm so fickle that I can't think of where I want to permanently attach this cleat to AP - I always use double sided tape before I drill. Take the cleat, put the double sided tape on it (get some heavy duty tape so it'll stick), then just stick it on the yak. This way you can try out different spots before actually drilling. That's what I did. Check out my pics above in the thread so you can get an idea of where I installed my cleats. Good luck.

I wish I could get away with those kind of anchors. I am currently using 75ft rope to the bigger claw anchor (i forget the weight) then I have 3ft of heavy duty chain between them. Yet, I still don't have enough anchor for San Luis Pass on heavy current days at the bridge.
