I don't know why people claim to know the stain of bass when they catch them, the only way to know is genetic testing. You can't eyeball it.
Regardless, nice fish.

Regardless, nice fish. Considering the location I'd say it was a fair assumption.

Thanks guys. I don't know why people claim to know the stain of bass when they catch them, the only way to know is genetic testing. You can't eyeball it.
Regardless, nice fish. Tim, you're right. Until the NLMB and FLMB are recognized as separate species (by the states), a largemouth is a largemouth. I edited the OP. Some (a few) reservoirs in Virginia are managed for trophy bass fishing and have florida strains (and intergrades of course); most do not. This particular reservoir was never stocked with florida strains; I checked. Which is a shame, because it is my belief that this place could produce at least a state record contender with enough deep water sanctuary, some shoreline cover to protect the young fish, high forage (bluegill during warmer months) to predator ratio, regular trout stockings, and not too warm water to prevent burnout. That is if, and it's a big if, the florida strains didn't get killed during the harsh winters that we often have in the blue ridge mountains (where this reservoir is located). I actually learnt from a fisheries biologist that you can count the scales on the lateral lines to determine if the bas is a pure NLMB (less than 58) or not. Admittedly I didn't count the scales of this particular fish, but I have performed that check on several fish I have caught out of here. Since I realistically do not have a shot at a state record class fish out of here, I think it just stokes my ego to indicate that I caught a (in comparison) big NLMB..

Sweet! That bait weighs close to 6 ounces so it gives them a lot of leverage to throw it if they jump. Did you have a stinger hook on it?
