Probably a week or so too early for croaker, usually May 1st is the earliest, but never hurts to call and ask. Piggies work just as well if not better and should be available. Too early to tell what will be worthy of doing next week. If another front comes in Portland shore line, or Steadmans will be viable options. Otherwise, Nueces bay or off 361 might be worth investigating. Wade fishing? A couple of small blurbs: Portland shoreline (next to Indian point pier) This area is hard bottomed and easy wading. It is best on a calm day or when the wind is out of the North or West quadrant, i.e. N, W, or NW wind. Wade this area immediately to the left of the pier, and all the way to the left down the Portland shoreline. If you have trout green water throwing artificals will work. If the water is slightly off-color, live bait will probably be a better option. Steadmans Reef Steadman's is located behind, (southwest) of Fin & Feather Marina on the south side of highway 361. You'll drive behind Fin and Feather and pass the RVs parked there, and park at the edge of the water. Steadman's is straight out from the point of land. This area is fishable in just about any wind direction; a west wind would probably be the only wind direction that would make fishing hard. With a south or southeast wind, you can wade the flats downwind from the reef proper. This is mostly grass, mud, and sand, with potholes and grass beds in this area. With a N, NW, or NE wind, you can either fish the same grass flats towards Aransas Pass, or you could fish the reef out into the Morris and Cummings Cut area. The water there is deeper and mostly a sand bottom.
Good luck next week, let us know how yo do. i will be going down next weekend to Ingleside just wondering if anyone has been down to this area lately hopeing croaker will be there but if not will use shrimp or artifical any reports would be great thanks will go from portland to conn brown

Ah, boat changes everything. We've caught very nice sized speckled trout in late April fishing the 2' depths of the backside of Hog Island up by the Klondike's if it's very windy. Live shrimp and Alameda Cork. If the wind is light, I would suggest the front side of Steadman reef or in front of Dagger and Ransom island. If they have croaker that'll work, otherwise live shrimp under an Alameda. Also might consider the downwind side of pelican Island along the CC channel.just watch out for the large ships running the channel. These areas have worked for us in the past in late April. Good luck!
