What is the best way to set jugs for fishing 2ft of water? If my hooks are set at 12-18" deep would that leave enough room for them to pull down for a hookup?

Was thinking of something like that but I'd prefer to do without the extra weight and space that would take up in a small boat if possible

Yes sir fish with rod n reel all the time. My kids would like to do some jugging. This will only be my second attempt at it. If I was a jugger I probably wouldn't be here asking this question as I think I would already know the answer. But yea I've been that way forever the rod n reel only kinda guy gotta keep the family happy also its not all just about us.

Are you going to be in sight of your jugs to chase or will you leave them to come back and check?

That is another thing I was thinking of instead of tying to the end of the noodle what if you were to tie to the center? That should leave more room for a hook up in shallow water right?

I would just set a trotline if there are places to tie off and place a bottle in the middle as a float. The problem with setting jugs in that shallow of water is that you dont really have a lot of space to work with. That being said, i would probably leave them un-weighted if i was fishing that shallow only because you will probably get a better hook set letting them run with it. Since this is for the kids, it will also be fun for them to chase the jug around trying to get ahold of it. If you do that, number your jugs so that when you pick them up, you do not leave any jugs in shallow water where people may walk or swim. If you do weight them, then try to find something to use as a weight that will sit flat against the bottom so that you have as much space as possible for your hook and bottle. I would not have more than one hook on any line that short. Jugline fishing can be a lot of fun and very rewarding to the work, but they need to be checked reguarly, especially in shallow water and always removed when finished, making sure you have them all through a numbering system. Also, if you are setting and checking jugs and removing fish every time one is hit, you may disturb your area with repeated access into the area you are fishing and scare the fish away. Another system would be to check ever 2-3 hours and rod fish on the outer edge of the area you are jug fishing. Hope my 2 cents helps!!

Just remember that each jug line has to be properly marked with a durable tag stating your name, address, phone number and the date that you set the line or you may receive an unwanted visit from the game warden.

Yea man I have 3 girls of my own who id like to get hooked. and 2 little brother in laws 13 and 9 years old who fish with me often. The oldest has been curious about jugging for awhile now so I figure let him check it out and hopefully get enough action to get the girls interested. Good quality time with the family + mom may actually want me to have even more fishing gear i dont need. It's a win win

Made up a few noodle jugs for this morning. Tied to center instead of the end hooks 12" deep for the 2' of water 1oz of weight to slow them down because we had a pretty stiff wind. Worked out pretty good. Caught 16 blues, 3 channels, and 2 crappies. Kids had a blast they can't wait to do it again.

What did you use for bait on the jugs?
My personal best is still swimming out there just getting bigger. One of these days I will quit feeding it.

In that shallow of water You could use a reg old cane pole and attach a "jug" to the butt end and a couple hooks and a weight to the other just throw the whole thing in the lake and keep and eye on them.. that way the kids could just chase it down and grab the cane pole and fight the fish or fishes to the net . Not sure how you caught the crappie you mentioned but I don't think it's legal to keep crappie or any game fish besides catfish caught on Jug lines

I'm the same way Budward, I don't have any luck with a fishing pole. If I put some jugs out, I never leave empty handed.

I'd be interested to know why this is the case. Anyone have a good reason why jugs seem to catch more fish?

So what is everyones preferred bait for the jug lines? I start fishing with jugs when it starts to get hot weather about the time native nightcrawlers come up. Or I use Catalpa worms. Not after a world record just good eaters.
