log perch are the only true Perch species in the south, they never get bigger then the picture in the first one the are actually a heavily prolific bait fish in some areas but rarely used as they dont school and tend to stay around 10 to 15 feet deep, they feed by flipping small gravel around and eating the small bugs and what not that come up when they do, they are actually a cool little fish and from what I've heard if ya have one make great live bait for bass cause of their shape

Its not about how deep you can fish but by how you wiggle your worm

I have caught Log perch in my cast net on lake grapevine. I only seem to catch any around McPherson Slough. The area has lots of rock and gravel so I dont know if that is where they tend to live.

Yup. I've netted 3 in my life. 1 in a creek, 1 in Hubbard, and 1 in Texoma.

Does anybody know if this fish is legal to possess?
1 or 2 of these would be a nice addition to my tank, but
all I can find is that TPWD officially considers them a non-game
"species of special concern". not threatened, not endangered.

I'd bet I could talk to 7 different TPWD guys & get 7 different
answers.
If anybody gets one of these, I'd like to have it. Alive & healthy of course.

I've caught a bunch at McPherson Slough and Trawick boat ramp to the left. You can catch them before sunrise with seine net. Winter or summer they are abundance if you know where they like to hang out. I have caught a lot every time I seine them.
