Had the chance to get a Frontier out on the water today to see what they are all about. Looking at the boat you will notice right off is the width. This thing is WIDE! Pulling the boat off the trailer i noticed the weight. It is a heavy boat but certainly manageable by one person with the handles at the bow and stern plus each side of the boat. I wouldnt want to car top this thing myself but the back of a truck would be no problem.

My first thoughts on the water were that it wasnt going to track so well but a few strokes of the paddle and it straightened right up. I was very suprised at how well it tracked for such a wide boat. The speed didnt seem to bad either. I also noticed how manuverable the Frontier is. It will turn in a hurry. I would recommend at the least a 260 paddle. I think NuCanoe recommends a 275. With my 240 I was banging the sides of the boat but it wasnt horrible.

Now on to stability. WOW! I was able to stand anywhere in this boat and feel perfectly safe. No issues with standing up and turning around to adjust the seat. The seat base is mounted on a rail system so that it can be moved closer to the bow or stern to properly trim the boat depending on your load.

Overall I think NuCanoe knocked it out of the park with the Frontier. Its a huge improvement over their first model. There is also a Frontier 10 coming soon. If you would like to demo the NuCanoe Frontier feel free to send myself or Dan a pm and we will get you set up. That or get by Anglers Pro tackle in Hurst and talk to Rick or Patti. They are great folks to do business with! thumb

Did you feel that the floor had too much give? Just wondering if it has a flex kind of like a tub style boat. Kind of worried with such few scupper holes is there any lack of support in that 20" cast and blast deck?

Thanks for the review. I am considering this as a family kayak to be able to take the girls out with me...

I noticed very little flex in the deck.

Thanks for the info - I'm starting to look for a tandem for fishing with family - up until now the only standout was the big tuna but I got to see this yesterday at mariner-sails and it is a strong contender as well. Going to try and start figuring out how to rent/demo one for a few hours in the next 2-3 months to figure out which I like better.

Nice report!
I'm thinking I need a tandem, and that Frontier is on the top of my list. I just love the clear deck space and flat floor, and the slide trak, and in my opinion it's more a canoe than a kayak which isn't a bad thing!
Like you said, I also think they hit this one out of the park!

Just one more cast!

Thanks for the review. I've been wanting to demo one. The more I look at it, the more I like it.

I talked with Blake at the Mariner-Sails show Saturday and walked through the boat with him. Lots of cool features on the boat. The deck has three channels that run underneath so the deck has very little flex. It's very stout. I helped a gentleman car top one on an FJ and we were able to do it. The weight is not as much of a problem cartopping as the wind. It's like a sail. Pickup bed would be no issue.

A little update on this review for you guys. i had the chance to fish out of the Frontier today and pack it down with some weight to see how it would handle.

The Frontier will handle some weight! The ice chest up front is loaded down. I also noticed all of the lashing points for tying things down. They are laid out well on the boat. I think this boat will be great for overnights down the river. Maybe that will be my next update to this post if the weather will cooperate. thumb

I haven't been in one yet but somehow they fit 650lbs capacity into a kayak that only weighs 77lbs. Pretty sweet.

You can put so much junk in the Frontier, you'll want to take the kitchen sink, too! They also track better with a load and are easier to paddle once you get it up to speed.
