Welcome to the "Annual Sandbass Hybrid Striper Run" @ Rowlett Creek @ Lake Ray Hubbard & Hickory Creek @ Lake Lewisville and many more!
I'm Carey Thorn. Licensed Professional Fishing Guide. Full Time, Year Round, FULLY INSURED FOR YOUR SAFTEY & MINE. Guiding for Over 10 Years at Rowlett Creek and my clients and I have landed over 100,00 fish from just one little creek. I will show you how to land these hard fighting fish all on your own. If you just don't get the hang of it, Ill take two people out and teach you how to do this on your own with out me, the very next day, for $75.00 each.
Now, what are we talking about:
White Bass/ Sand Bass: Are freshwater fish that are migratory in nature, like Salmon. They spend most of their lives in the open-water portions of lakes and reservoirs or river pools. But when water temperatures rise above 55-60 degrees F, its usually the peak time to catch them. Between February and May, White Bass migrate up rivers and streams seeking gravel or rocky bottom areas to begin spawning activity. With the end of March being the "Peak Time", in Central Texas bodies of water. Males arrive at the spawning grounds about one month ahead of females and we call them "Scouts" (5-9 inchers). Rather than build nests, white bass spawn in mid-water. As the males and the female move toward the surface of the water, the female releases 62,000 to 1,000,000 eggs that are rapidly fertilized. During this, you will see a pod of fish come to the surface and boil during spawning. About 10 fish or so, will be in this pod of boiling fish, with one female in between the ruckus. A lot of people will cast to the boiling fish, but usually don't respond to their bait, due to they have one thing on their minds at the moment.
These adhesive, fertilized eggs, sink to the bottom and stick to gravel, boulders, or vegetation. The eggs hatch in two to three days, but because the adult white bass do not protect the eggs, few survive. Those that do, however, grow rapidly to 4 or 5 inches in length by the end of the summer and migrate back to open water to join the adults in the main lake. So when you catch a 5-9 inch Sand Bass, 99% of the time, it was born in the very same creek or river.
White bass can be easily confused with striped bass, hybrid striped bass, yellow bass. You might want to study how to tell the difference between a Sand bass and a Hybrid Striper. If you don't figure this topic out, the game wardens will help you out after giving you a big fine and possibly taking you gear and impounding your vehicle. Make sure you don't miscount and go over your limit and make sure the fish are 10 inches or over. I try not to keep anything unless its 12 inches and over. The little fish, 10-11 inches, just are not worth the time and effort to clean. But, the ball is in your court, keep what you want within the law.
The typical weight of a white bass is between one-half and 2 pounds, though they can grow to 3 or 4 pounds. The world record white bass is 6 pounds, 13 ounces. Most grow to a length of between 10 and 12 inches, though they can reach 17 inches or more. Their life span can be as long as 10 years, however, few survive more than four years. Like many fish, females generally grow large, faster and live longer than males.
White bass are attracted to small, live bait, such as shad, shiners and minnows. They are also more than willing to bite an artificial lure, another reason they are popular with anglers. Such lures as small jigs and crank baits, as well as top water lures, have proven successful. Its not uncommon to catch over 50 to 100 fish per outing, Sometimes over 300 on a good day. If you have the right gear and you might get your limit of 25 fish within 30 mins!
-Even Kids Can Do This!!!

The use of a bobber in the winter and spring fishing crappie and sandbass in the creeks. These vids are about crappie in the winter. The sandbass are hugging the bottom as well. They will mainly hold in deeper pools and pockets and shaded areas. Part 1

I have fished with Carey during the white/hybrid run and it is a hoot. Nothing like fighting a mad sandy or hybrid running all around your waders. He knows where they are.

I'm liking the lights on your boat more and more, bordering jealous.

Todays Report: Scouting Rowlett Creek
Hit the Hell Hole at RC with BaffinBay. Only fish caught (by me) was a HUGE 9 inch Black Bass- put up a 2 second fight. It was awesome. -Back to WRC I go till RC starts..... The fish at WRC are still good. Mainly 9-11 inches on average, but some of the females are 13-15. Creek is fishable just like all of them, jig and bobber is your friend at WRC. This is the first year I have seen a really good run of whites at WRC. If you cant see the bottom, your on the fish.
Air Pressure: 30.45 rapidly dropping Water Temp: Freakin Cold Air Temp: 55 Water clarity. 1.5 ft Amount of people in the hole: 6 Terrain: Slightly Muddy Banks (wear kleets)

Its that time. They have started to trickle in in bigger number all over DFW! I just got a kayak, might try Rowlett Creek on Sunday. Never been, planning on putting in at Miller Road, you familiar with it at all? Water levels okay? Think I'll be okay in a yak? Enjoy the videos man, thanks for the info. Never fished the white bass run. I'm excited.

Are the sandies in Denton creek yet? Where is the "hole" everyone talks about?
I don't always fish for sand bass, but when I do, I fish for them in a horrifyingly violet manner

Take Centerville til it ends at Firewheel. Turn right on Firewheel as if your going to Rowlette. As soon as you cross over the bridge (Firewheel bridge) you will need to take a right and jump the curb. You will see the parking spots and the creek. Walk left down the creek to reach the hell hole.

What is firewheel bridge? centerville and rowlett rd? Yes. --------------------------------- Todays Report: Cold, but productive as usual I told my client for the day I was 50/50 it would be worth fishing due to the cold front and the Air Pressure was all out of wack and super high.... Dropping way to fast. He said lets try it....So away we went! So anyways, we waited till the coldness burned off and hit the water at 10 am or so. Every pocket we hit in the creek had schools of fish but we would only pick out 2-3 per pocket and the fish would spook. So we had to move a lot. If we laied of the pockets for 10-15 mins and went back, we would pull out another 1-2 fish. 2-5 ft of water was what I was looking for. If I coulnt see the bottom, there were fish there... Crankbaits in minnow colors and fluke and bobber were the go to baits for the day. We saw lots of sandies moving upstream where we were, mostly males with 10 percent being females. So, I would say it time to hit the creeks. I would be very surprised though, if the Hell Hole produces fish tomorrow. Good luck on that. I dont think they are up there in numbers yet, but, they show up when they want to. We had a small False Run with the warmer rain a few weeks ago, but those fish are already caught out of there. Tally was 30-35 sandies and keeper crappie. -Tomorrow I am solo so I'll see what I can really pull out of there.

Welcome. We had a big rush of sandies last night. A hole that was void of fish yesterday was full today. Took Jonathan to the SSSL today at. Threw some minnows at them on the bottom with a small split shot. The first hole we stopped at produced 15 keepers in 30 mins. Second Hole produced 10-15 keepers in 20 mins. Third hole produced 60+ keepers within an hour and a half. We went through 1/4 of minnows (usually I go through 1/2 per person). They were even eating dead minnows, so sometimes we could catch 3-4 fish on the same minnow. There are sweet spots in the creek systems that will hold fish all day long. The fish in the pocket we were fishing today, were moving with the shade. Like I said before, fish the shade. caught them in 2.5- 4ft of water. Left them biting.... 2 Man-Limit of Sand Bass Fishing is outstanding right now boys and girls. Book a trip and I promise you, your arm will be sore later that night from these great fighting fish! If you cant walk the banks, we can take the 19ft center console up a creek as well ( Rowlett Creek is not the only creek I fish at ). Sit & Fish or Walk & Fish, your pick. $75 per person. No minimum this year. GoPro Video will be uploaded if I get bored enough to edit it. Click Here to Book a Trip <--------

If this amount of rain actually falls, RC will have a small run and it should get better. Its obviously producing fish for those that know where they are and what they want. Report: Actually it truley was slow. When we got there the pressure was 30.18 and rising slow. No biggy at all. We quickly land 8-10 fish, then it was crickets chirping. Did I really catch everything out of this hole already? My client keith said "check the pressure", it had jumped .07 points. Well, all I said is, we can only wait it out and hope it steadys out again..... 2 hours later the bite picked up again and started landing fish. You cant do anything about it but wait or go home, but, you will still pick up a fish here and there, but most of the time its affects them and slows them down...... Big time when they are in the creeks and rivers in the shallower water. Got a couple doubles here and there. Minnows were still king of the day. Great action when they were biting and they didnt go more than 5 minutes in between bites.

Hey Carey, do you think we will get some sandies out of the river below Lavon this year? Or Hybrids?

The three main things sandies want in rivers and creeks:
1. Moving water for the eggs. If silt build up on them they will not hatch, which the river has no moving water right now, or wind blown banks for that matter, making enough current for the eggs to hatch. The River at Hubbard will not have a run of sandies in big numbers unless the water is moving. Lake Lavon is 9 ft low. They will not be opening the gate anytime soon. (they will be opening the gate for a couple hours in April or March to flush it out a bit "I heard". But that will not trigger a run.) There are some that will make it up there, but not in numbers worth driving the boat up there to get.... There is one hole up there that has year round sandies in it, but maybe 50-100 of them in one spot....Most wont even spawn, the ones that make it to the river and no current happens. They will just absorb all the eggs.
2. They go up rivers and creeks to spawn not ony in the current, but rocky sandy and gravely spot for the eggs to get good flow over them. It only takes like 3 days for them to hatch. You will see the fry all over the creek if you look (when they are spawning).
3. Temps: I see them start to spawn at 58-61 degrees, temps in the creek that is. Two of the creeks I am fishing at right now are 57-58 degrees and the females are starting to trickle in as the males always, usually, arrive before the females do. IMO

Report:
I was 50/50 on going out this morning with front and all. 28 degrees when I woke up, brrrr. Landed 10-15 fish from 730-9 with 5 being keepers. Lock Jawed and no fun. So about 9 am I called the trip and resceduled for a day next week. -Sometimes it happens, not often though, lol. I really hate cold fronts.

Good call Carey. I went out scouting the creek yesterday afternoon with my boy and got skunked. We threw minnows on bobbers, 1/16 rooster tails, 1/16 road runners... all with no success. But it was still a nice day and we had a good time. -Fat

Cold front is here and lingering around. Some of my spots are still producing high numbers of fish, but it has slowed down a little bit. The best bite seems to be as the day warms up. Around 2-3PM during the day is when they seem to be biting best. Minnows on the bottom, 4 pound line, small split shot, seems to be the best way to produce a large stringer of sandies. Small Rapala's In chartreuse, and anything in minnow colors works as well too. If the fish are slow, put a small split shot above your Rapala and sink it on the bottom. So basically your Carolina rigging your Rapala. If there's enough current, it'll just bump it along the bottom with the Rapala floating a little bit above the school of fish. On cold fronts and high-pressure days you got a fish slow and keep the bait in the strike zone for as long as possible. If you really want to throw Rooster Tails ( 1/8 oz )and you keep snagging and losing your rooster tails, take off the back treble hook and replace it with a size 6 or 4 single bait hook. Make sure you use a bronze colored hook, that will keep the yellow bass off the rooster tails hook. Those small yellow bass are hitting your shiny hooks and not the main lure. So if you get rid of your shiny hooks, your yellow bass catch ratio will go down. And again, most of the fish at Rowleet Creek, are from the bike trail parking lot all the way to Miller. It really need to warm-up before those fish make a huge run-up that creek, and a nice warm rain or flood would help out a lot as well.
This is a perfect time for me to take a mini vacation with this cold front lingering around for the next week. So, I'm off to Vegas, leaving in the morning. Have fun and be safe.

Report: Round II ( Fly Fishing) Jack wanted to try the sandies out on the fly rod so he hooked up with his buddy John and we hit the water. Jack already got his limit this morning, so he was catch and release learning how to fly fish. If jack will set the hook before the fish poops it out, he will be fine.

20 mph winds. Not where we are. The trees break the wind down to nothing while fishing feeder creeks and some rivers. No wind and no wind chill. No trailer. No boat. No depth finder needed but your eyes while walking the banks looking for sandies. Once u find them, they should be there till mid May! Report: Monday Fishing was slow. The air pressure was way too low today at 29.74 dropping. When it superlow or superhigh the fish get real finicky and spooky. There's one spot where I'm fishing that you can see a school of 50 or so. They were schooling from shady spot to a shady spot. If you casted into the shady spot that they were holding, they would spook and go to the next shady spot. So what we were doing is putting our minnow in one of the shady spots and waiting for them to school back to that spot. Worked very well that way. The deeper holes were obviously holding more fish. Just more fun to hit the fish we could see eat the bait. Slow, but still hit two man limit.

BaffinBay called me and said he was headed to Creek/River/Stream #X-254, so I hopped in the truck and went down there. I decided I was going to throw the fly rod for a bit, so I strung it up and went looking for BaffinBay in the woods. When I found him, I started throwing things in the woods behind him, and freaked him out a bit. I fished for about an hour and a half and quickly filled up a stringer of sandies, while I watched BB throw everything in his tackle box like usual. Had a good time as always and still finished a bunch of chores. 1/64th oz White Neer Deer @ 3.5 ft deep. Small twitches in the strike zone and it was Sandie Time. All fish were males. Females should show up after the next rain.

Bass Pro Shop in Garland is having a sale this Saturday and Sunday, and they have a tank set up downstairs for the kiddos to fish in. I went out today and caught 300 or so Blue Gills and stocked the Kid Tank at the store. -So go get em! When I was coming home this afternoon crossing over George Bush over the lake, fish for blowing up everywhere, pelican seagulls and cormorants were bombing the shad and I could see huge explosions from the hybrids hitting shad. There is a lot of timber over that way so be careful if you go. FYI.

Report: over 100+ sandies landed. (15 mins of video during the trip edited down) [video:youtube] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hMRzPyAypo&feature=youtube_gdata_player [/video] I'd say it doesn't get any better than that, but it does! The hybrids and the BIG female sandies will show up very soon!

I had the pleasure fishing with Cable Smith and his dad a day ago. Cable Smith is the host of the Lonestaroutdoorshow.com. He does the radio show on Saturday mornings at 8-9 am and you can hear my interview with him on the radio, 95.3 fm this Saturday morning. He has never flyfished before, so I brought my flyrod and we hit the creek. We practiced roll casting for about 15-20 minutes, after he got that done and he graduated the roll cast, we went hunting for the Sandbass.

Yesterday, I stopped at the Hell Hole to check out what was going on. No one had any Fish? Weird. I was talking to a gentleman that was fishin there for the last 3 hours, and I asked him if I could rig his rod up the correct way after watching him for awhile cause I wanted to see if they were really there or not . ( he was using 20 lb line and huge weight and huge hook bigger than the minnow) -So, I put a 4 lb flourocarbon leader on his line and a small split shot, and a medium sized live minnow on a size #6 hook. I showed him where to cast, and wouldn't you know it, he landed one within 2 mins. I left 20 mins later and he had 5 nice mag sandies on the stringer. So with that said, they r there, u just need to fish for them my way I guess......?

Today's report: Morning trip The fish started biting at 730 and quit at 10 am or so. The air pressure dropped 3 points and shut them down for a bit. Then it was a bite every 5-10 mins. Two man limit.

I had the pleasure of fishing with multi-repeat guest Chance Doggie Thorn. She already knew how to fish so it was a pretty easy trip. When we got to the creek I explained where to cast and how to cast. I told her to target the shade seeing as to how the fish were stacked up in the shaded pockets. Within 45 minutes she had a limit on the stringer. She was throwing small flukes and minnows. Great job Chance!

It just can't get any better than this. Tiny flukes and minnows. The fluke bit was great today, so minnows were not used much. If you think you are going to run your boat Up RC, all you're going to do is, spook the fish. You might as well walk in anywhere you go, to get to the creek. It would be a lot faster than trailering the boat out there and wasting gas puttering all the way there. As soon as your boat goes over the main school, you scatter them and they will not bite for very long time. If your adamant about taking the boat, go up the Creek anchor or Brushclip to something. Cast upstream and back to the boat. Don't go upstreaming and cast behind you, it won't work like that. Rollet creek is just too small for a boat to go up and expect to catch limits. You want to stay on the banks and cast in the deeper holes and shady pockets to land fish. Even a kayak will spook the fish. That's why I'm not in my one man pontoon boats!!! The fish require moving water to spawn.. The river has Absolutely no moving water whatsoever, So they are not going to go to the river to try to spawn in huge numbers. There is a very very small population of them there now, But not worth sinking your boat to get all the way up there. Not all the fish go up the creeks. They're still fish in the main like for you guys to get with boats. If you do decide to go up the creek and river,be very respect full of the bank anglers. As you pass by them I guarantee you, you just pissed them off big time. So drop ur trolling motor when passing, Or I almost guarantee you you'll get stuff thrown at you. But I'll say it again, you do not need a boat to go up Rowllet creek. Some fish will be caught at the mouth but these fish are on the move to spawn so they're migrating upstream. The closer you get to shallower water, the closer you are to all the bank anglers

I don't know how many times I have to say this. I said it on multiple occasions, and I say it every year. Do you want to stringer that looks like this: Well that is what your stringer will look like if you take your boat up Rowlett Creek! I can't tell you enough, that, your boat spooks the freaking fish. All I'm here to do is help. I'm getting reports of one person that keeps going up the Creek. That person is blanking every time, and telling people that the fish are not there yet. And this is a person that should not blank. The main school is from 66 to the bike trail parking lot at Castle. Let me ask you this: Have I ever said don't take your boat up the creek? There is a freaking reason I don't take my boat up the creek or the run. Because it spooks the fish! Dam. So, that is the last time I say that. This statement only is addressed to Lake Ray Hubbard people. I've only been fishing the creek for 15 to 16 years, I think it's safe to say: I know what's going on. The best way to fish the creek, is using these: If you use your feet power, this is what you can expect to catch: So with that said, the above picture was from today and as well the below picture. It was a slow day due to the air pressure was rising on us all morning. My clients for the day said they were having a ball but I was still telling them that it was slow. They didn't really believe me, but a fast day- a normal day, you catch one every cast if you're fishing my way. I have all the information up on this post for you guys to catch fish. If you stick to my little bubble and stay in it, you will catch a lot of fish. If you go outside of my bubble, good luck to you. I canceled my PM trip for this afternoon due to the air pressure had shut the fish down. We would still catch a limit but it would take the whole six hours to catch a two man limit. That's just the way I roll. So if you have a trip with me, and I call you and give you a "option to rescedule", there is a reason for it. I would take my option and reschedule. If the fishing is slow I don't want to drag you into the creek and only catch half the limit. I want you guys to have fun and catch as many fish as you can within the 5 to 6 hours till you get bored of catching them. In spots in the Creek, you can see over 500 Fish sitting in front of you at any given moment. The fish travel upstream as far as they can to spawn in the shallows. Taking your boat up The creek will do you no good. ( Did I say that again?) -well, believe it.

TarponFly,I went out to RC two days ago, and just like you said there were hundreds of Whites and some pretty big LMB's swimming around. I went to the pipeline about 100 yds downstream of hellhole. I Got there late (10 am), but still managed a couple fatties on minnows just like you posted. I tried the flukes without a weight, but no takers. Are you using a jighead with these or am I doing this right with just the #4 hook? I have caught some LMB with this presentation using flukes on Sam Rayburn, but I'm not too familiar with sandies. Thanks

Only in shallow water. 1-4 ft. #4 or #6 hook. Hook the fluke like if it had eyes. It's in one of my videos in my YouTube link below.

Fishing was great this morning, and then plumited. Air pressure dropped rapidly shutting the bite down. A few spirts here and there. But slow. -slow to me is a fish every 5 mins. I am used to a fish every cast. Or at least a strike. But there is nothing u can do but wait them out and see if the weather stables out. This morning was great and the jig bite was on. My client caught two on the first two casts. An hour later it slowed down to a fish every 5-10 mins with minnows. Lures no workie when the weather is unstable. Another tip: don't go to shallow waters and throw slabs. They don't work. Lol So ya, Andy and his wife caught a couple here and there, and they both got to hold up the stringer for a hero picture. But, they both actually got a limit to hold up! So did Marcus! Slow day, but better than being at home.

Well, I decided to hit the water today and waited for the weather to chill out a bit and got in the truck and went. The first spot I hit I caught two and under five minutes. Decided it wasn't enough action for me so I went Way upstream approximately a mile and started fishing again. Ended up limiting out in 19 minutes after I got to the second hole. Slow day in paradise. A bit chilly too.

Yesterday I took Al out to the creek. Caught about 30-35 on the fly rod and had lots of long distance releases. Today we had 2 limits taken. After I was done with the morning guys, I headed down for a limit. 20 mins later I was done with my limit.

What a day: Monday Funday ( multi species report ) Video Fly Fishing for Sandies ( Below ) Started at Creek X with a fly fishing client at 730am. His first cast didnt really go anywhere, but the next cast he rolled it out perfectly. And, wouldnt you know it, he hooks up. ![[Linked Image]](http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/tarponfly/Crappie/0106A48D-DB38-4D52-B41D-41F17344975F-133-000000019AC9149E_zps76c72d9f.jpg) He then tells me, "Going to be a slow day, huh?". He caugth 40-50 and he was done at 10 am. 95% of his casts resulted in a hook up or bite. And only two other fly fisherman on the entire creek. ![[Linked Image]](http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/tarponfly/Crappie/D4653BCF-2221-4A20-8D7B-D177E1B77305-133-0000000193206B5D_zpsead61af4.jpg) Solitude at its best. After I dropped him off his his car, I went back down and got a limit of sandies in 30 mins or so. -I was side tracked tring to float a fly past some 40lb Grass carp eating disk shaped seeds on the surface. All I had were some clousers and one elk hair caddis which they ignored. But, I have a good fly now, to throw at them next time. ( I was CPR on sandies today so no hero pic ) 11:30AM: I arrive home and kicked stuff around the garage. I was bored, so I figured, I'd take the boat out to Lady Lavon for some crappie before the rain hits (sprinkled on me for 5 mins). 2:00 pm: I quickly arrived in a cove and started to fish the shallows in 1-4 ft of water. ![[Linked Image]](http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/tarponfly/Crappie/2BE3E448-D963-4921-B5C8-80F24CA7D51A-133-00000007BEDCFB96_zps7c8e33b1.jpg) I hit every stump I could reach. I landed 34 Male crappie, all keepers from 12-13 inches on average. Not one female. I probably hit 40-45 stumps. So, I went out in to 9-16 ft of water and fished brush and tree tops. In 45 mins I had landed 14 Fat Slabs and everyone of them was 14 inches or so. ![[Linked Image]](http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/tarponfly/Crappie/546B5590-9D8E-4B10-BA3D-7882F2D56C5C-133-00000001AF1EBC8B_zps787c299a.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/tarponfly/Crappie/2a6392dc-f63f-4891-b416-c208b0184417_zps8d9405cb.jpg) All Crappie are still swimming. 5:30 pm: Im home again. Boat back in garage. I'm bored again. So, I am off to Rowlett Creek to find something big to pull some drag! 6:10 pm: My drag starts to scream! ![[Linked Image]](http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u201/tarponfly/Crappie/AE8C0D13-0A6B-4724-9607-3B926ADA436E-133-0000000179A452B9_zpse3065110.jpg)

Cold Front Just Flooded 6 Hours Before Trip Started Fish Didn't Care Pink Was King Today Today was a great day, as usual. Clients limited within 30-40 mins. Got to the creek and it was muddy looking. But, we could see our baits 1-2 inches or so under water. Fished slow, and they caught well over 100+ sandies each. They had a fish on the line pretty much the whole time. They were doubling up 70-80% of the time. Lots of mags and fat females. We tried minnows a couple times but they wouldn't touch them! Not one fish off a minnow. Just jigs and small cranks. We could blind cast out into the pocket and you catch one just by reeling in. Pink/chart Thump Buddy's from lightsouttackle.com, was tearing them apart. After my clients got the hang of it, they ran off down the creek on their own for 1-2 hours. It didn't matter where they went, the fish were in every pocket we went to. Great day of joy joy. So when they were wondering around the creek, I stayed with the gear and BaffinBay was chilling with me at the Hell Hole II. There are a pair of Mallard ducks that have a nest close by, and I see them everyday. At one point they spooked, and flew right at us and over are heads. So, I thought maybe someone was coming up the trail. Then I hear a big big fish slash in the rapids, so I looked over and saw a deer standing in the rapids. I looked at BaffinBay and told him to look downstream. Two deer ran accross the rapids and up the cliff. First time Creek Deer in DFW. Red Fox, Otters, Mink, Owls, Coyotes, Bobcat, seen all of them there now. And of course the Hero Pic

Started the day off with a 20 inch Hybrid on the first cast. Then nothing but sand bass, on every cast pretty much. The guys limited out by 9 am. Then it was my turn later on in the day. Hooked 14 Hybrids today. Would have gotten more but the super secret bait of the day, was terrible in quality. Hung out with Acehole and BaffinBay half the afternoon. Acehole, got to grab my rod when a hybrid took off with the bait during my hero Pic. Thats why I look surpised while staring at my rod almost getting yanked into the water.... -And this was the result of my Carbon-Lite almosted getting yanked in the creek.....

Round Two: My turn. Hit Rowlett Creek for 2-3 hours. Hooked 19 and landed 12 Hybrid Stripers. Fun times. No clue how many Sandies I landed. I would get mad when I landed one. They would eat my secret bait before the hybrid would get to it. Mean Sandies. All catch and release today.

I Had a client cancel on me at 10:30 pm for the morning trip. Not very nice at all and it was a first time experience for me, but, it gave me a day off to go play around and find the Hybrid Stripers again. And, ill tell you what DH, y'all missed out. I got my secret bait for the day and headed to my secret holes. It was Hybrid City! They were on fire and eating anything with reason. I must have broke off 20-30 easily and landed 28 solid Hybrid Stripers and 20-30 mag White Bass/ Sand Bass, and the turtle in the above pic. And I had a whopping "0" people around me. Everyone was in the Hell Hole crowding each other. Go down stream and find ur own hole. The fish are everywhere as I have said in the past. Find 3-8 ft of water in shady pockets and if you r fishing the correct way, you should hook up. At one point my hand was dripping blood from the teeth on the Hybrids, digging into my hand. Everyone knows what " Bass Thumb" looks like. Well this is what Hybrid hand looks like. After I got bored of catching Hybrids, I headed to the Hell Hole to chat with BaffinBay and Ultralite. I was standing in the water and a dead shad floated to me on the surface, so I put it on my jig and bobber rig and sent her out. Didn't take long, and the bobber disappeared. Then I looked at Ultralite and he was hook up. Mine was bigger. Haha. I reeled in a couple more Sand Bass and Hybrid Stripers and went home. Took a nap and did t wake up till 7 am today. Guess I was beat! And now for the Eye Candy: All my fish were 24 & 25 inchers. Only 4 were under that mark for the day.

Hybrid Stripers must be 18 inches or longer to take home. You can catch 5 Hybrids a day and retain 10 ( meaning fish from yesterday) Good luck explaining have 10 hybrids in the cooler to a game warden. If you limit, YOU CANNOT GIVE ANY FISH CAUGHT, TO OTHER PEOPLE, AFTER YOU LIMIT. That means "you" retained more fish than your limit. The NON-CORRECT way to measure a fish: -laying the tape measure "over the fish", is not the way you are suppose to do it. The CORRECT way to measure a fish: If I see that you don't care, that you have an under sized fish, and you keep it, trust me, the game warden was called or texted about your violation. Not only me, but a lot of other TFF'er will call on you. And, you may not keep game fish that you catch in a Castnet. That includes largemouth bass, sand bass, yellow bass, catfish, hybrids, or crappie. They must be released unharmed. You might loose all your gear and your vehicle the next time you decide to take a chance and keep and under sized fish, besides the ticket, for poaching.

Well ...you can go fish more...not keeping the fish you catch by throwing them all back of the same fish you kept earlier... ... or you may fish for another species of fish and keep that limit.

Introducing the New Rowlett Creek Hybrid Striper Record: 7.65 lbs 26 inches. Caught by a Jr. Angler while on a Hybrid Striper trip with me, this morning! His brother also caught the New Channel Catfish record. No intel on weight on that one. -if they turned it in. His brother caught a 25 inch Hybrid Striper as his biggest this morning.

Fish are still going strong. Went and fished a bit last night and saw 100's of Sandies and Hybrids swimming up the rapids. An amazing site to see. Looked just like salmon running a river. Lots a magnum sized White Bass and 20-25 inch Hybrid Stripers all over the place. Limits are easy right now. Even the fly fisherman are landing 5-8 lb Hybrids and tons of Sandies. The small baby hybrids have shown up. Make sure u look at the tounge patch.

The hybrids are still there. Thinning out, but there. Had lots slap the fly today, and some monsters r still there. This rain Thursday might push them all out. Or, bring in another batch. I'm calling for pushing them them out. Shad are showing up thick though. I have seen the Sandies and hybrids stay in the creeks till the end of may due to large amounts of shad come up to spawn every morning and evening, and the fish stay when the bait is plentiful. Thursdays rain will tell. If it flood the creek up, Sunday will be the best day ever, or very worst day. Carp are spawning all over the creek. 100's of them. Caught the new Black Bass / Large Mouth Bass Record for Rowlett Creek. Fly fishing is very challenging at Rowlett Creek. But obviously it can be done done. I get just as many strikes using a fly I tie as the minnow guys. 90% of the time u can out fish everyone.

That is a great catch Carey. Nice job. I had a blast with my fly rod up at the other creek sunday. Even though the pressure killed the bite I really got the hang of whipping that fly rod. And I actually caught a fish on it --LOL-- Thanks for the tips and report

Yes I have been to muddy creek. Fun, but my clients loose to much tackle. Man did the creek shut down this morning or what? 645-730 was crazy fast action. My two clients had me running all over the place. Every 2-3 mins I was jumping in the water to grab a hybrid of their line. It's definetly almost over though. Half of the hybrids today, I did surgery on. Lots of them had hooks dangling out of their mouths from previous people breaking off. I see this every year. When u start catching fish with hooks in them, the population of fish is dwindling down to nothing. I am not saying its completly over, but the rain will definetly tell us what the creek will produce after the creek clears up. I will try one more time this weekend, maybe. Otherwise, it's time for me to leave the creeks and start putting people on limits of channel cats, crappie, Sandies and hybrids from the boat.

Here is my opinion on the air pressure: Air pressure affects a fish's swimbladder as it rises and falls. http://www.usairnet.com/weather/conditions/?station=KADSFrom what I have come up over the years, the fish are more comfortable in a range from 29.85 to 30.10. If the Air Pressure is 30.40, or higher, I will cancel your trip. If the Air Pressure is 29.60, or lower, I will cancel your trip. If the air pressure is 30.50 or higher, you are going to have a hard time even snagging a carp turd. I stay home and I won't even go fishing. The reason I will cancel your trip sometimes are due to the air pressure, and I will give you an option to pick a new day, or go out anyways and only catch a couple. So if I call you before the trip and say: " you have an option" : that means I don't like the something about the weather, and I'd prefer we pick another day. I like to limit every trip and then possibly go limit on Sandies after crappie, or vice versa. If the pressure is out of wack, we are not going to do that. Now, this is not by the book. This is all what I have noticed while fishing. Sometimes they will bite when the air pressure is all wacky, but 90% of the time, the air pressure, will prove itself. I find that fish 15 ft or shallower are most affected by the rising and falling of barometric air pressure. The fish in deeper water, are already pressurized, due to the water pressure as you go deeper, so they don't seem to be as affected as the shallower fish. Again, this will only tell you why the fish have slowed down and are not biting anymore. There is nothing you can do about it, but wait it out till it stabilizes or just go home. As an example: This is a perfect day with the air pressure. You read it from the bottom up. The top number is current and the bottom number is hours ago. As you can see, the pressure is going up, but its rising slow and steady. That's a perfect day to fish in that scenario. Now, the pic above is a very bad bad day to fish. We start at 29.83 and the pressure plummets all day and won't stop dropping. This really will shut the fishing down to a trickle or non at all. My rule: Example: If the pressure is at 29.87 and drops two points to 29.85, the fishing will slow down a bit. If it drops or rises .02 or more, your fishing trip might be a site seeing trip. If it rises or falls .01 at time, you should be fine. If it rises more than .02 fishing is slow. If it falls .02 or more fishing is slow. If its steady, or rising .01 or falling .01 every hour, fishing is good. If the pressure rises or falls more than .05 an hour, I'll just go home. I am pretty sure, a couple of you guys were out yesterday Crappie fishing Sandbass fishing or hybrid fishing, and that 830 in the morning the fish completely stopped biting. The air pressure had risen .02 points at a time within the hour and then it started to drop rapidly as the storm front started to roll through. Example: We were fishing yesterday morning at Rowllet creek, as soon as we got there we started to pick up hybrids left and right every single cast. Then at about 830 the fishing completely stopped dead in its tracks. The air pressure had risen .02 points and and the fish completely stopped biting. We could see 20 to 30 hybrids sitting right in front of us but would not even budge. And again, there's nothing you can do about it, either wait it out or go home and come back when the air pressure stabilizes. I see this happen to me almost on a daily basis. I save the link in my smart phone, and refreshes every hour as I'm guiding to tell me what's going on under the waters surface.

Well I was off. All the creeks had another run. We hit the water at 730 and limited out by 755 am. My client landed well over 100 fish by 9 am. Every cast was a fish. Slowed down a bit as we left, but we were still landing fish after fish after fish. Forgot the hero pics this time. All on flukes. We were out fishing the minnow guys.

I went to the creek for about three hours today. Cassnet it's some bait and immediately pulled in approximately 40 to 50 Sandbass. Also I landed 24 hybrids from 16 inches to 24 inches. Everything was CPR'ed. I'm flying to Utah in the morning to go flyfishing the green river below the flaming gorge reservoir. So don't call me, leave me alone, I probably don't have any cell towers there anyways. See y'all next week! The Rowlett Creek Hybrid Record has been beaten again by my previous client Jack! 8 plus lber certified! Great job Jack!!!!!!!!!! That's a massive fish!

I think we are still a month away from the run. I expect a few cold fronts to move through which will push the run back. We also need some more rain to raise the creek. Pray for rain.

I located a small group of about 20 males that came up during the warm spell we had. They show up when they want to show up. And, they leave when they are done. I have never been able to predict them. 5-6 years ago I had them in January in the snow, all the way at the gun range. Never saw another person till end of feb that year. You just got to go look in the water. U will see them if they are there.

Welcome to the forum!
Tawakoni, Hubbard, and Texoma are the lakes you hear of most, well at least I do. I would read as many posts in this section as possible and follow this thread as well. Plenty of knowledge to be shared by many.

It would be easier to tell you a location if you narrow down where you live. There are a lot of Striper lakes all over the country. Millions of feeder creeks and rivers.

"5-6 years ago I had them in January in the snow"I remember this as well.Got the itch to go to Miller rd and just see if anything was there.Sure enough I hooked into 6 good size male sandies withing about 15 minutes and then nothing.Scratched my itch for the spring run though.

Fish are finally trickling in where you can catch enough for dinner. I hit one of my 7 creeks I guide at, and today I went see if they were there and found 30-40 Sandies from 8-14 inches. Threw a finesse shad on a # 6 bait hook and twitched it, in the small pockets below rapids. Jig and bobbered the deeper holes. I'll try and get pics tomorrow.

Tawakoni for East Texas and hire Matt Cartwright (Lakeguide on the forum). I have used him for 8 years and I own my own boat but he really helps me catch way more fish when I am in my own rig. Texoma for North Dallas and Chris Carey is the man to hire as I have used him for 3 years and same goes for him.
Many groups go together to these lakes and are full of helpful fishermen. Reach out with PM's and you will be surprised.

This is a spawning run thread. Not a boat thread. Those guys don't do creek and bank trips. But, after the run, I also do boat trips - when the run is over. Matt and Chris are great in the boats too.

I'm excited! I've been following the thread to see when they start running again - my nephew is dying to go again. This year should be awesome. He's finally learned how to cast, and is getting a bit of accuracy. I need to get him to practice a bit more, but it will be nice to just let him cast and retrieve by himself.

Went to Creek XX and ripped some lips. Landed 87 white bass in 4-7 ft of water with 6 keeper crappie thrown in. All released. I could see a few running rapids as well. If this rain hits hard Sunday, all the creeks in DFW will, should, have a small run. Landed all fish with the fly rod.

Creek XX is where I was. The original Creek X is to low, along with RC. Remember the Trinity River below Ray Roberts and below Lewisville always has water. LLEA, below Lewisville, is fun and usually pumping out enough water to get the sandies moving, but only open Friday-Sunday. Otherwise u can park at 121 and walk in. Stay in the flood plain. Don't hop out on the trails, otherwise ur on private property. Your water rights allow you to navigate any creek or river in Texas as long as you are in the flood plain. 50 miles of river and feeder creeks. You can fish all the way to the dam if you want, as long as you don't get out of the flood plain they cant say your trespassing. There are sandies all the way from above Ray Roberts all the way into Downtown Dallas in the river system. Don't eat fish past Downtown Dallas! Everything North of Dallas is safe to eat. Navigable by Statute http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publica...rs/navigation/riddell/navigability.phtmlUnder a law dating from 1837, a stream is navigable so far as it retains an average width of 30 feet from its mouth up. The width measured is the distance between the fast (or firmly fixed) land banks. A stream satisfying the 30 foot rule is sometimes referred to as statutorily navigable or navigable by statute. Under a court decision, the public has rights along a stream navigable by statute just as if the stream were navigable in fact. Fly Fishing Creek XX on 2/27/14 : Had to sit Indian Style due to a tree in my face. Would have been easier to get them from the other side, but the glare was to much. When fishing the banks in Texas, That clay is dry right now that im sitting on. If you were to get some rain, There is no way you will be able to stand or even sit where I was. Get Soccer Cleats! My buddy almost slipped in 20 times.

How far up river or streams do these fish move? I'm planning a camping trip with a friend and he wants to go to Pedernales Falls State Park. I'm wondering if they travel that far from Lake Travis.
How come I keep catching small fish when every product I buy is supposed to catch more and bigger fish?

I wouldn't be fishing the actual lake. Pedernales State Park is pretty far from the lake that's why I was asking how far upstream do they migrate. I would just be bank fishing the stream there

not too many go up as far as Pedernales Falls State Park even when water flow is optimal. Reimers gets the bulk of the run, as does Hamilton Pool area. They don't go much further than dripping springs, not in mass numbers, anyway.
When there is a flow, Reimers can be absolute dynamite.
Beautiful place too.

No. We should be under water in every pic. I normally run that creek full plane in my boat when its full. 1 more foot and it will be a small trickle of a creek. 8 ft low.

Something to look at since it cold out. Below is what happens when I get bored with the fly rod and spinning rod. When they're biting, they are biting! And it's time to go get them! Finesse Fishing. 4 lb line, a hook, and a fluke. And, here is for the boat guys ( Fishing Roadbeds ) If they are on the road bed, its a double every drop. Or however many jigs you have on. Most I can tolerate is five jigs that a time. Then it just gets stupid dangerous

Report: Steady. Air pressure wacked out today making it a bit slow. I have yet to try a minnow or lure on a spinning rod. I'm using very small jig flies. 1/80 & 1/100 th oz ( in my store on my website are pics of what I'm using). There is not a lot of bait in the water. The minnows that are in there, are very very small. About an inch. 4 lb line is a must right now. Anything over that, is over kill and your catch ratio goes down. I even dropped down to 2 lb line today. With the barometric air pressure all out of whack, the fish were very skittish. As soon as my fly would hit the water they would scatter. I would cast to the opposite bank and drag it into the water, that way they would not spook. Eventually you will find out where they stack up during the day. You need to keep whatever bait you are using in the strike zone for as long as possible. Very very small twitches are needed to keep it there. You got to at least keep the moving a little bit. Pausing too long, causes the fish to be able to study it a little bit longer and he will just swim away. Keeping it moving gets that predatory instinct kicking and they will strike out at it. Please do not cut down trees because they are in your way. Those trees provided shade for the fish. You cut them down, the fish won't hold there anymore. That was a moronic thing to do, Who ever you are. And pick up your trash. I know its not y'all. Just sayin. And the results: Then a client called me wanting to come play. I told him it was a bit slow and he decided to come anyways. First cast produced a fish. He was catch and release today. In 2-3 hours he landed 20-25 solid fish on the fly rod. Fun times. And this is only the start!

Here is the jig I'm using. 1/80 oz. The bait in the creek is very small, so match the hatch. I'll just add a split shot above the hook 6-8 inches under a float.

Report: Slowish today. Got to the water and handed my client a fly rod. He said he didn't know how to use it. I said that's why you are here today. I only had to show him one time how to do it. After that I never critiqued him. Picked it up like a pro. If we don't get rain soon, I'll have to merge into the boat and take boat trips this spring. Not much fishable water this year. 10 people is to many this year -so far. Running out of fish too. These came up on the flood in December during that warm misting rain. Need a fresh batch to come up. And along with the Professional Landscape Company Wannabies that keep cutting the trees down so they can cast without effort. That's pissin me off and the wardens are watching for who ever is doing it. He said if he catches the person or sees anyone cutting bushes, tress, or anything else destructive, its a free ride to county jail. No ticket. Zero tolerance. -Overhang trees provide shade for the fish to hide during sunny days.

My photobucket app won't turn my photos the right way so I'll wait till they fix the bug till i post pics.
A bit slow with front coming. One of my guys had to leave at 9 am, due to his employee ran company truck into a building. He was almost at his limit. As he left, 5 mins later, the fish stopped almost cold. 1 fish every 5-10 mins after that. They would bite in spurts. The whole school would turn on at the same time and everyone would hook up. Had a lot of triples going on when we first showed up. We flyfished and used spinning gear. One spot, the fish had come up on their sides, up a 1.5 inch rapid and laid up in a 3 ft long by 1 ft wide, 8 inch deep hole. Amazing. Just like salmon. If it floods this weekend, u will be able to blind cast and catch them at creeks x y and z. All we need is for the water to rise 3-5 ft constant for 5 plus hours and the fish will push way way up the creeks. The run is almost over. Less than 2 months left.

Went out this morning and just hammered them 25 sandies in just 43 min. Using artificial was best fishing the middle of the water column

Previous trip. Fly fished half the time and spin fished half the time. Air pressure shut the creek down bad mid morning. We could see the fish, but they didn't want to move. When that happens, only live minnows will trigger a bite to complete a limit. Otherwise it's a fish every 10-15 mins or so when the weather is wacky. 4 lb line #6/#8 bait hook 1/32 oz split shot 6-8 inches off the bottom. If the split shot is any closer, the minnow can't get away from the blue gills and they peck its eyes out and kill it. That's why your minnows come back w/o eye balls. When that happens just push the split shot up the line a bit more so the minnow can swim around more and get out if the way of the blue gills. Every 1 minute, lift your rod tip up a foot and drag the minnow. Then hold it there again and repeat. The minnow will try and hide under a leaf or stick preventing the game fish from finding it. Dragging it so often prevents it from hiding in stuff and when u move the minnow he starts wiggling again triggering a predatory instinct bite. Small minnows are working better than medium minnows right now. Main reason is the bait in the creek is very small, 1 inch baby schools of minnows. Match the hatch. Baby bass assassins are a great sized jig right now on 1/32 oz jigs.

Report: Half way through the trip, I decided, we needed to reschedule. 100's of fish 5 ft in front of us. Landed 10 maybe. I have no clue why they were lock jawed today. Everything was perfect. The fish were SUPER spooky. Lure or fly, hits the water, fish go nuts and start zipping around the pool spooking. They just never settled in. Afternoon bite should be better from 5- dark.

That happens! All the graphs and charts and weather theories there may be, sometimes the fish don't bite -- even when you think they will. Keep at it! You'll get them sooner or later!!
I do enjoy a good Squirt now and then.

Thanks for the report Carey. I was out at the creek with the fly rod yesterday and didn't get a bite. But I did l FINALLY learn how to cast that fly line 60 feet. Quite an accomplishment to me --LOL--

WOW 60 ft on the fly rod? This I gotta see, PlanoKeith! I cant even throw 50ft on my baitcast! But fishing line on a soda can, I can do 100 ft with ease

Once you learn to shoot your flyline, you can cast out there pretty far. Of course if you are casting 80 feet in front of you, you need 80 feet behind you too. I can get my 5wt line out to around 35 yards, maybe a little more. I can't get a baitcaster out as far as my fly but a spinning reel casting that far is doable.

This morning was night and day. Every one was 5-8 fish from hitting their limits. Then the pressure dropped from 29.73-29.70 and all that was going on was crickets chirping. The fish just shut down. Waited an hour and landed 2-3 more and called it. We threw minnows and everything else at them, but they lock jawed. Front coming in always messes them up.

That's a good video. The different part that I do for a long cast is to let the line go out some by loosening the grip of the left hand during the "reposition". You can "shoot" a lot of line out by doing that. Makes it easier to drop the fly right where you want it too.

I've been double hauling for a long time time now. I remember when I first learned it, it was the distance equivalent switching from a .22 to a .308 for me. With enough room behind me, I can cast all the way to my backing (and I don't have a short flyline either!). If you flyfish for more than just trout in streams, this is a very valuable technique.

Thanks Carey I need to come by and purchase some near deers anyway so it will be a learning buying trip --LOL--. Toxarch, desetflyfisher, Sounds like i am on the right track. Thanks for all the input I hope to get out there once when they are biting.. It is really a challenge for me because this is only the third time i have held a fly rod in my hands I need to get up north soon with Carey and try some trout. My brother lives in ARK and he said the trout fishing is good up there. So next time i visit him I am taking the fly rod Heck I might even go to the park pond and try to catch anything . Carey I figured it was going to be a good day the pressure was right in there.

Oh wooo, the Double Haul. Eh ! In a creek the really big poop a good Roll Cast, I'll say.
(unless you are out in the open, and need distance, and then, yes, the double haul is effing awesome)
The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

All u need is the roll cast. No need to act like Brad Pitt in the River Runs Through It. I can roll cast 30-40 ft easily.

I took minnows out with me yesterday for the first time due to the low air pressure to start the morning. We still caught more on finessing a tiny fluke. Waisted $10 on minnows for two fish. When they shut down, they shut down.

Ya. We fought ice all morning on the eyes of the rod. 4 lb line and a small amount of ice don't work well together.

Thanks. But kids are easier than adults. Kids don't listen to the mom or dad while fishing. But when them are next to me, they listen for some reason. They don't make up their own rules and basically copy what I show them and don't have bad habits. Lol.
Report: today was so bad that I'm not going to talk about it.
As for the rain. Calling for an inch. If we get it, I'll be at Rowlett Creek Full Time!
Creeks just need to rise 3-4 foot during a flood and its game on. Maybe even a school of hybrids should make it up.

Hey, TarponFly, I've got a question for you, not sure if this is the place for it or not though. I have a fly rod I've never used before, I have the basics down well enough (I hope) and I want to try this evening. What kind of fly should I try out? I know I have a couple wooly buggers other than that I'm not sure what the other ones are called.
Last edited by MrWood; 03/14/14 05:48 PM. Reason: I'll be fishing Denton creek. I walked I yesterday and it does connect to the lake. Shallowest part is probably 6".

Hey Tarponfly
How do you get that hourly pressure report on Usairnet? I browsed all over their website and couldn't find it.
How come I keep catching small fish when every product I buy is supposed to catch more and bigger fish?
