2" pvc thick wall about 5', cut 1 end at angle to make it easier to put in ground, 1x4 about 2' long to drive infront of it for brace, another 1x4 in ground for reel leash to connect to or tie to truck. Drive pvc in about 2-1/2' at least. Good luck and tight lines.

I'll tell the best way.
Use 1.5" or 2" PVC. Buy a 10' piece and cut it in half. You can cut it straight or an angle (mine are all cut straight).
Here is the part that might sound weird at first. To set them in the sand, the easiest way is to jam it down in the wet sand a couple of inches, put your mouth on it and suck the air out while twisting. The PVC will shoot down deep in about 15 seconds and won't budge! Sounds crazy but it works and its easy. Try it!

My husband is a metalworker so he whipped up these rod holders out of aluminum. Sturdy, light-weight and the cross-bar is great for pushing it into the sand. (This is my first attempt to post with a picture so I hope I do it right!)

How soft is the sand down there? We've only used them in Florida and have had no problems...so far. How deep do you suggest a rod holder go in the sand? These go in at LEAST 12 inches, that's 1-1/2 angle aluminum.

I have steel rebar rod holders that I bought at Academy. They work great with a foot rest that you use to push them deep into the sand.
I also have surf spikes for smaller rods. I use them on the pier and beach.

PVC is the best thing ive used for surf. Get some 8ft 2in pvc and cut in half works great. Now if your working short rods for some land based shark fishing get 10ft lenghts and cut in 5 ft peices keep the rod higher.

Is it best to angle the PVC pipe backwards when doing this? Sorry I missed this. I don't angle backwards at all. If I ever do it is very slightly. I know a lot of people will tell you to angle backwards, but I just put them in straight up and down. I've never ever had a problem with one pulling out. I use some heavy shark gear with heavy drags too.
