I'm new to kayaking, I've now been out a couple of times and have enjoyed it, in fact, I'm kinda addicted to it. I want to plan a trip to Port Aransas and take the Kayaks to catch redfish and trout. I have been looking at the lighthouse lake paddling trails, and was wondering if that the best place to go, when is the best time to go and some advice in general for a newbie. I look forward to your responses.
Thanks

I have only been there once, in October and had a blast there. We had our trip planned far in advance and only advise I could really give you is don't go if the swell is going to be at your shoulder. We could not yak the shore due to wind. PINS was lined up with yaks all down the beach waiting for the swell to go down. Which happened the day after our trip was over. We it was so windy we even chose to bank fish the lighthouse lakes right off the main road. We caught lots of 16"-18" reds but only one decent 22" red. I went in October and I can't wait for the next trip. smile

"Slowride" guide services in Aransas is your best bet. No one knows LHL better. He can also be found on TKF saltwater forum.

Its a fun paddle but crowded on weekends. Sometimes the fish are there, other times they are not. Play the tides, look for, bait, watch for birds, all the normal stuff. Sometimes you will see them tailing, other times you wont. Dont ignore the sheep head and drum. Take shrimp. (At least a bag of dead) Spring, summer, and fall. All good. (Sometimes)

We went for Thanksgiving and was really windy, I'd like to have done the lighthouse trail, but this was close to where we stayed so this is kind of what we did, going by memory. It was a pretty good little loop. You don't realize how big the area is until your paddling against the wind and you have a long way to go. Oh yeah, if you go in the fall, you better be in an airboat, with a duck dog and your camo ready to hunt, the ducks down there were craziest thing I've ever seen.

Yep. Those are my stompin grounds. I live right across the bay in Portland. Bout a month ago a buddy of mine and myself found a school of around 500 drum in that area. We followed them around with the trolling motor for 2 hours. We plucked em out of that school for a while. Thats always a good area for fishing but just like light house lakes it does get crowded on weekends.

Make sure the check the tides when entering LHL. Low tides and you have to drag you yak out. Lots of oyster beds and in low tides you will have trouble wading out.

Check this site: http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/ and do a search for light house lakes. One of the post will tell you about low tides and when to stay out.

If I remember correctly, winter months are not good months for LHL. Good Luck

I've caught specks, reds, flounder, skipjack, and shark at shamrock island. It's a really nice place. The lhl are a great place too if you can get in there. I prefer to fish the cuts a little farther down the Lydia Ann channel. The Aransas/Lydia Ann channel intersection can be good as long as you don't get run over.

If you plan on fishing Shamrock launch from the caliche road on the south side of Wilson's Cut. The boat ramp area is known for break-ins, and the caliche rd is safer launch. It also cuts down on the paddle.

I was the only one fishing out of a group of 6. Trying to convince 5 people to paddle slow so you can fish isn't that easy either I learned. I had a few real good bites and since I missed them I assumed they were flounder. Either way, its fun I can't wait to go back.

Take anything of value out of your vehicle. Might also leave the doors unlocked or roll down a window to the street. I was warned before going. We took heed n Nothing happened to our vehicles. Lots of yakanglers in the area.
Don't hang out in the channel or u might get run over as strangler posted. Lots of fish in the spring -fall. But the channel is often productive just have to keep moving and looking to find em. Dolphins can
rob u blind so Don't leave your catch in the water. If they R working in the area the bite will often turn off. Consider coming back later.
