I'm headed below PK on Monday and I want to catch my first Trout on the fly. What type of fly should I use, top and bottom? I will be throwing a 3wt.

Thanks,
Bryan

Beadhead or cone head woolly bugger up front in olive or black. Small, dark beadhead nymph below.

make sure to fish it cold. EEEaarly morn is prime. In my experience with PK trout, if you're fishing >55*F [air] your day's over. The best day to go is when you have to chip ice off your windshield. 65-75% of all the fish I've caught at PK dam were before 9:00a

Plus people tend to wake up after 8

I have had luck with a PMD parachute and a black midge dropper. Black and olive are my go to colors. I have also used Elk Hair Caddis flies with a black dubbed body.

I have been there when a PMD and Black Zebra Midge Hatch are happening. That was a good day. It was all done by 8:30 AM.

Don't forget late in the day when the sun goes off the water.

I was there Xmas eve morning. Pretty slow, one trout by the hatchery creek. Had a couple of strikes that I missed. I attribute that to getting to the parking area late. The sun was up when I got there, but not on the water yet. I had the place to myself until about 10 AM. I also saw GW when I was there - nice guy.

I went Wednesday and did pretty good. 13 rainbows, 4 small white bass, and 2 decent bluegills. Fly of choice was a wooly booger thrown on my 3wt TFO. All catch and release.

Size 12 to 8, olive or black wooly. I usually have the best luck with olive in those sizes.

I guess there is a reason that the fly is a classic - it works. I always catch a few and then switch flies to something different. You never know.... might work.
