Its not that im looking for a monster cat to eat, its just i always wanted to catch some good size cats on a trotline so i finally made one and now ready to see what its all about. i might end up sticking to rod and reel like i always have for the past 15 years. how deep are you fishing right now with this weather?

Go put that trot line in Cottonwood lake at Decatur if you want to catch a monster. Bait it with carp, or Big bluegills. Fish it on the bottom.

J & D Fishing, welcome to the forum. welcome Best place to run a trot line is in the trash. If you want to enjoy the thrill of a big fish, do it on rod and reel. There are many good fisherman on here that will help. The fish have been at the 20 foot range and less lately. With this front I expect them to go deeper. Do you have a good fish finder on your boat? If so start learning what catfish look like and trust your electronics to target them. Good luck with the fishing.

If you want to fish like a trot line does, then just put on big baits on several rods and sit there and wait. The only difference between a jug/trot line and a fisherman is the amount of patience they have. That is the reason set lines do well is more patience. Keep that in mind when you are fishing.

Trotlines are no good unless you are commercial fishing. You may not realize it but people run trotlines over with the boat motor and it can cause serious damage. If you run a trotline and someone else fishes in the same area they could get snagged on your unattended line and have to jack around for thirty minutes until they get it loose. Sometimes people put out trot lines and then never come back to run them for whatever reason.

No big fish in Ray Roberts. Your best bet is Lake Worth. I can show you the spots anytime next week, of course in your boat.

Trot lines in a lake where you can't even eat the fish?

it just so happens to be that the biggest fish caught almost anywhere in the world are caught on trot lines or jug lines..

I say why not use a method you like if it catches more or bigger fish?

Yeah, it may not be fun to many people but it works.

You don't always need a boat..
But gosh darn it, sure helps!

I usually run my trot lines in the spring and summer. And I usually run them at night in the shallows. Winter time for me is rod&reel time. A deep set trot line for me is a pain in the rear

I have to second this in theory. I do not run trotlines, but if I did I would not run one in winter. Trotlines are a pain in the but in general. Juglines are a safer alternative.

This has always been my thought about trotlines. In order to be legal you have to tag them, and that just seems like a big liability. You might think you got your line located where no person with a lick of sense would go jet skiing, tubing, or wake boarding...well a lot of those people don't have a lick of sense. I have seen idiots treating trees like they were obstacle course cones weaving in an out of them. If they go down and get hung up on your line and drown, you can expect a multi-million dollar lawsuit.
