The retractable dog leash has worked well IMO for anchoring in shallow fresh water. Harbor freight currently has these for $4.99 reg. $9.99 Paid $7.99 for my old one but it was just a tad short for my taste. It did last me a few seasons though. It doesn't retract all the way anymore. So, when I saw this one on sale... ChaChing!!! Package says: For dogs up to 50lbs. yep, been using a dog leash for a while also. still haven't come up with the best way to attach it easily to the yak.

they work I have one on my Coosa. The Coosa and Big Tuna are designed to use one. I use 21" of heavy Chain on the Coosa. I have not tried it on my Cuda. I'm sure with all the brain power on this forum it can be adapted for any kayak.

...How do you mount yours in your yak? A few mods n its Rigged & Ready...  Hybrid, I prefer not to mount mine. Either I clip it to the anchor trolly if i want to anchor off that side or anywhere i can on the other side, depending on which way allows me to position better. i will also put the leash under my leg and hold it against the yak if im just checking out a location for a few min. Feel that mounting it would limit how many ways I can position. plus, i will use it on more than one yak so i would rather not mount it.

Great idea... I think that it's best attribute is not its low cost; convenience; and function....it is the ability to stow the line away automatically. ANYTHING that will keep my decks clear is a great addition. Thanks for posting!

I use to use one a lot until i lost it on the drive =(...worked great for a while but the saltwater chews one up in a few months...i just ziptied it by the handle next to myself on the kayak and ran it through the bungees so the anchor point is as far back on the yak as i can ....
