The following is my opinion re best white bass structures for 2012. I fish pretty much exclusively for white bass down on structures, and have been doing it on Cedar Creek since 1999. I'll give a brief description of the top 5 structures and the results I've had on each structure this year. All structures are on the attached map.
#1 Dam Ridge (AKA Big Tree Ridge): It gets nod for best because it produced the most fish - 625. Found it without fish only 6 times out of the 22 visits. Best catches were 70 on 3/26, 93 on 6/1 and 90 on 6/9. I fish with an inline spinner either a #2 or #4 Mepps plain Aglia silver spinner.
Dam Ridge is O on the attached map. It runs NE to SW and high point is about 20 ft at normal lake level. I usually find fish right on top or on the west slope.
#2 Merimac Point: It gets 2nd place and has been the most consistent structure throughout the year. I fished there 22 times from Feb to Oct, caught a total of 398 fish and came up empty only once. The best catches there were 40 on 3/26, 40 again on 7/16 and 40 once more on 9/3. Other catches there ranged from 5 to 25 fish.
Merimac Point is J on the map. The underwater point extends eastward about 250 yards out from the shore. I usually find the fish on the NE edge of the point in 15 to 17 ft where the bottom is sloping down to the east and to the north. (Id guess about 180 yds east of the shore) Other times Ive found them farther east in 20+ ft and on the north edge in 16 to 18 ft. Ive never found them on the south side of the point.
#3 Staubach Hump: Caught 216 fish in 13 visits. Came up empty only 5 visits. Best catches were 42 on 2/17, 24 on 2/27 and 74 on 5/28.
Staubach Hump is M on the map. It is elongated in the NE to SW direction. Its high point is about 18 ft at normal lake level. The northern half of the hump is usually the best with fish on top of hump or on both east and west slopes.
#4 Key Ranch Drop-off: Caught 197 in 22 visits. But came up empty 9 times was better than this in past years. Best catches were 28 on 4/6, 30 on 7/12 and 40 on 10/8.
Key Ranch Drop-off is E on the map. At normal lake level depth is 13 ft at top of the drop-off and falls off at about 35 degrees into 30 ft water. The edge of the drop-off generally runs S to N but takes a sharp turn to the west as you go north along the drop-off. This corner is the best place to find fish either at the top of the drop-off or on the north and east slopes.
#5 Saint Annes Point East: Caught 142 in 12 visits this year. Only came up empty twice. Best catches were 35 on 4/20, 25 on 5/28 and 20 on 8/27.
Saint Annes Point East is A on the map. Looking carefully at the map you can see that the point is long and narrow protruding from the shore in a SSW direction. Note the deep water between it and the broad point to the west. The easiest way to find Saint Annes East is to go easterly across that broader main point. You need to be out where the broad point is about 8 ft deep. As you move in ESE direction the bottom will go down to 25 or 30 ft. Keep going ESE and it will come back up again on the narrow Saint Annes east point. Where the water bottom on the point is about 13 ft is usually the best spot. You can sit on that spot and cast east, south or west and work your bait up the slopes of the narrow point.
The next 5 best spots for me are: Greenhouse Ridge, East Dam Hump, Spillway Hump North Edge, Game Warden Hump and Mid-lake Hump (AKA Maybe Hump). I know there are ome good spots farther north - like The Tennis Courts, Sunken Island, Enchanted Oaks Ridge and the Iron Wall, but I don't get up that far north very often.
