Has anyone here tried this technique before? What are your thoughts?

I thought that was the only way to fish shrimp for trout and reds.

Yep, a very well written article with lots of good info. Remember to vary your timing as well. 5 seconds between pops seems a little quick to me. I may go as long as 10-15 seconds.

There's a couple of small things I will add to my setup. I had forgotten about adding beads.

If you run out of live shrimp, try hooking a Gulp shrimp the same way you hooked the live shrimp.

This setup will also work with a regular 1/16 oz jig head and your favorite tail. Just work it a bit faster, like 3-7 seconds between pops.

I have boxed many fish over the years using with this method. It's especially enjoyable for less experienced fisherman, kids and wives. Something is almost alway pulling on the cork.

I use a rattle weight with a DOA on the end. Same idea...just closer to the bottom.

He also only touched for a second on the depth of your bait.

I feel like it is crucial to have your bait at the right depth. Too short and the fish won't bite, too long and you are in the grass and the fish won't bite.

Generally, I go no less than 18" and no more than about 30".

The depth you are fishing also affects your choice of cork. Shallower water go with a smaller, quieter cork like a Mansfield Mauler. Deeper water go with something larger/louder.

In general, I feel like I do best with this rig in 2.5'-4' of water.

Too often; the sound of 'popping' the cork will turn off fish.

I use what I call a 'gurgle' when you pull the cork under to create the sound of a big old sow sucking in something off the surface. It works for me! CH

It's crucial to have the bait near fish! that is really the most important point when fishing that's overlooked.

Keys for that is finding active bait, slicks, or birds and knowing how to read the water. learn to do it right and a person can really up there game and size of fish.

Good point, how you pop the cork is another variable. Some days they may want it loud, some days not. I think it depends a lot on water depth and the amount of chop on the water.
