I was at the joe pool lake last night and caught some almost keeper size hybrid bass. I was using an ultralite spinner rod hooked up with a 1/16 jig head and ghost minnow for bait. What I did was cast out as far as I could and wait for them to grab it on the drop. Is there a better method of rigging live bait for hybrid bass? I was using my crappie gear and I could see the bass at the edge of my lights. I didn't know how else to present the bait. Should I use a bobber?

Hybrid as in hybrid stripped bass? I didn't know that Joe Pool had them.

Joe pool only has sand bass. Did I use submerge lighting or jus shine on water? With bobber, u can present ur bait at certain depth if u kno where they at.

I have underwater lights at my dock and catch lots of sandies under them. Early in the night before the fish show up, I try to catch as many of the ghost minnows I can. Rig them with a small gold crappie hook and a small clamp on sinker about a foot above. Just drop it down and hold on.
Small white feather jigs also works very good when you can't or don't feel like dealing with live bait. I also use one of those long extendable crappie poles with the live bait or crappie jig. Most the time they want the bait almost still just on the edges of the light.
Good luck!

I've been able to catch a lot of sandies at night on Bobby Garland slab slayers. Usually drop them to the bottom under the light and slowly work them up, twitching every few seconds, then bam.

No bobber just drop it down and ease it up to you get bites. Night fishing is one of the best ways to fish in the hot summer.

edges of the light is the place to be...
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

the fish I caught had the lines on the side but they were broken in the middle not strait across, I thought this was hybrid? I will take pics soon, what is the deal with stripers and sand bass and hybrid bass, I dont know which is which.someone told me if the lines have a stair step it is a hybrid half sand bass half striper... I guess I should google it!

Whites and hybrids can look very similar, if you caught it at JP, it's almost 100% positive sand bass.

Go to TPWD and READ...they have a very good definition of determining the differences between Stripers, White(sand) Bass, and Hybrid Striped Bass....the lines have nothing to do with it! And, there are no Hybrids in Joe Pool, never stocked, none stocked in the river system above the lake either. TPWD: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/

WHAT EVER type of fish it is I can catch them ever time. I go now we are catching monster size catfish and I can take a little baby shad and catch one of these on every cast. I can see the fish in the water and I just shot a little road runner jig right down his throat.
