I've seen this stuff for years and everyone knows it is a sign of the lake turning over. But what exactly is that stuff?

GO -------> fish

"Spit in his mouth, Son. It will make him grow bigger faster"
My late grandfather Bill Chapman (and former lake patrolman at Lake Tyler, TX)
I have spent the past 50 years spitting in their mouths...increasing the size of Texas fish with every spit!

It's a colony of freshwater bryozoans...basically kind of like a colony of freshwater coral. When we found one attached to my dock a few years ago on cypress, we tried to find out what they were. They are harmless as long as you don't cut on them...they can release a poison

Seeing those also indicates a healthy lake. So as disturbing and alien like they look we want to see them!

Some of the pics of the brains from Fork last year were impressive. I saw 4 or 5 volleyball sized ones stuck to one branch in the water, so strange lookin. But as stated, they are a sign of healthy water.

I have been seeing that stuff floating around all year. I guess the lake turns over daily around here.

I saw 3, 3lbers yesterday under the dock here at the lodge. So I'm guessing it has turned over. Haven't seen any bass under the dock since June during the mid-day hours. Hopefully Sunday won't really hit 99!
